Hello,

I have an existing SLI config of 6600GT. If I change to a single 8500GT, will this improve my gaming performance?

Thank you.

No. Not even close.

8500GT is about as fast a a 7600GS which is about as fast as one (1) 6600GT

Thank you

In your opinion. What is the closest upgrade for a single card solution for my existing 6600GT SLI? ATI is also ok.

When you ask what is the closest upgrade, are you looking for something slightly better that is not too expensive? I assume that you have a pci-express system since you were looking at the 8500gt correct? If so then your only roadblocks are your powersupply and your budget.

I think a single 7900 GS would already surpass the 6600 GT SLI. But if you want a decent upgrade go for a X1950 Pro or X1950 XT.

I am looking at a single card solution to replace my 6600GT SLI, due to budget constrain the next upgrade must be:

- better than a pair of 6600GT
- support directx 10
- not to expensive but worth the upgrade

Hope to receive your advise

If you just have to have DX-10 support, the best bet would be to go for the cheapest 8600 GTS you can find ... frankly I think you would be better off grabbing an X1950XT or Pro instead & not worrying about DX-10 until theres at least a few games that make use of it.

MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC GeForce 8600GTS 256MB @ $175 + $6 shipping

SAPPHIRE 100186L Radeon X1950XT 256MB @ $180 + $6 shipping *(before $20 MIR)

SAPPHIRE 100176L Radeon X1950PRO 256MB @ $146 + $5 shipping

The only concern with the ATI cards would be your power supply ... you'll need to have a quality 450-500 watt model to be sure they'll run without issue.

Welcome to anandtech? If you had a general proximity of budget it would help a little... then again most will just overbudget about $100

Im gonna say 8600gt ~$150 or simply wait for ATI to dilute the market a little.

I agree with 8600GTS, or wait for new ATI midrange HD2600 line (R630) if you can fit it in your case

The 6600GT is still good for some time. You could wait a couple of months for prices on the new mid-range cards to drop after ATI starts selling its new line (July)
