6600gt running very hot..need advice

My Leadtek 6600gt has been running very hot lately, 55C@idle and 100@load. The main reason is probably that I'm using it in a SFF. I'm really worried that if i continue to use it, the heat will damage the card.

Any advice on what I should do?

I'm thinking of drilling on holes for a couple of exhaust fans but that's my last resort.
 
you have an agp version like i? i'm having similar problem here in video section, dang thing is hot. i'm looking for something, maybe the vf700 if i could find a way to trim the fins. because of the bridge, the cooler would have to extend about 1-1/4" past the edge of the card and my case is too small for it.
 
Doh this is beginning to scare me. I'm about to buy a PCI-E Leadtek 6600gt on Monday but this is kind of worrying me. Maybe I should get that MSI 6600gt? But I've heard bad things about it's hs/fan coming loose. 🙁
 
i have a msi 6600gt and i have yet to hit above 55C load with silencer 6 or even the stock HSF. If I were you guys, I would pick the cheapest reputable 6600gt and get an aftermarket HS because all the stock ones are loud.

try touching the HS itself and if it is barely warm, it is a seating problem

exhaust fans won't help since all that 100 degrees is concentrated on the tiny chip. you need to seat the HS properly so the heat is spread for convection to work
 
@ the man-no a silencer won't fit the agp.

@ others- the pci-e versions are fine because the silencer or the vf700 both fit. the agp has the bridge so currently it doesn't seem to have an aftermarket solution.

i agree, the problem is the core. the air coming out the back doesn't seem bad. i have removed a couple pci slot covers but it really doesn't help.

you should see this damn hsf. i mean, its like they didn't even try. some of the rams are half covered, some are fullly exposed. its a joke really.

i wish my case had another 1/2" so i could put on the vf700. or find a way to mod it.

edit--and its not a seating problem as i removed it and applied as5 and re-seated it. its making good contact, its just a crappy cooler. worse i ever saw, worse than my pny 5900xt.

Do you have the Leadtek to? Wow that is sad. Anandtech gave the Leadtek it's Gold Editor's Choice too...
 
its not the cooler, it can't be. it must be the gpu or something, because if the fan is working, its not going to get that hot with stock. unless ive never seen websites say that, i could be wrong. but still i wouldn't think its the heatsink. would it be safe to test the card for a minute without the hsf (i guess it would for a minute or 2)

I have Asus cards Sli and they have an excellent slim hs/f and great temps.

dont!! no amount of convection is going to cool that tiny surface!
 
i have a MSI 6800gt that runs at 64C at idle... but then again my case is always hot. I never really thought anything of it.
 
well, i'd never even think of testing it without a hsf 😛

mines an evga. i have had 3 evga 6800gt's, 1 agp and 2 pci-e and none approached this. of course those also are/were in my main rig, a much better case.

this is my first 6600gt. i had heard they are hotter but until i actually got the card i wasn't concerned. when i saw the layout in person i was a little stunned really. i know the agp, or i think anyway, was an afterthought on this card as it went to pci-e and they added the bridge to make it agp. i just thought they would have put some thought into the hsf they equipped it with.

i mean, not having ram sinks? better yet, the half covered rams? not to mention the hsf is just a thin little thing with a couple odd little feet on the bottom i couldn't figure out why. damn.

i think i'm going to contact evga as they have awesome support. i'd hate to send it back to newegg as its a good clocker, as i guess most are, but if i can't get a cooling solution for this it won't be any good to me.
