"An even more pressing question is the kind of hardware you will require to run Unreal Engine 3 games. Next-generation consoles will have no problems with Unreal Engine 3 games, but PC gamers don't need to worry, according to Rein. He said that a video card based on an Nvidia 6600GT, the kind currently available for around $250, will be able to handle games based on the engine easily. However, by the time any games based on Unreal Engine 3 ship next year, those cards will have dropped in price considerably, meaning that PC gamers won't have to drop big bucks on upgrades."

Looks like those of us with 6600gt's are still good for a while. I've heard some say that the cards won't run unreal 3 games well...hmmmm....looks like they're wrong.

I'm sure unreal 3 engine uses SM3.0, and this says that the 6600gt will do fine with it. But how will an x800 do with Sm2.0? It's odd that he directly mentioned the 6600gt.

this is not a Sm3.0 > 2.0 thread.....

I'd wait for more concrete details before proclaiming that the 6600 will be fine. For all you know it will run "easily" at 640x480 or with pretty much all features turned off or both. That vague statement isn't near enough to determine the meaning of "easily"

Considering how well the 9700 Pro does in every game out right now, I doubt the 6600GT will have much problems with the Unreal 3 Engine. I mean jesus, I failed to be blown away by graphics sometime when Final Fantasy X came out for the PS2. Until they come out with Virtual Reality or direct CG on the fly rendering for CG quality stuff (no polygons plz), I'd much prefer better GAMES and better Frames.

6600GT is a great card...but having both the 6600gt and the 6800, the 6800's extra 30-40 bucks in price difference is much more worth the dollars and trouble (its a big card). Real the 6800 outshines its cheaper alternative is turning up AA an AF on games like HL2 and Far Cry and Doom 3. Awesome.

The tech demo for the 6800 series when it was released using the unreal 3 engine was pretty chunky and that was on a 6800Ultra IIRC. I bet the next unreal engine plays on a 6600GT like the current unreal engine plays on a Ti4200, well enough but you'll have to turn the eye candy off. With that said I don't think any cards out yet, except maybe some sli'd ultras will be able to play UT3 at cranked settings...

yeah, but the engine isn't done yet and im sure the final will run better. i can imagine a 6600GT running UE3 at 1024x768 with no eye candy (AA/AF) at 30+ fps average, which IMO is damn good for how good UE3 looks 🙂
UE3 looks to be very CPU limited like the Source engine, advanced physics etc.

So when can we expect Unreal Engine 3 to begin appearing in games? While Rein couldn't speak for their third-party partners, he said he expects the first Epic PC game based on the engine to ship sometime early next year.

if that slips at all, i'm not sure it makes sense to plan video card purchases for games that aren't gonna be released for 12+ months.
