Right now, PCI-E 6600GTs seem to be fetching around $100 - $120 on FS/FT.
How well do y'all think they'll hold their value? I'm a little torn between :

1) Get a 6600GT for ~$110 to last till Dec and then switch to ???
2) Shoot straight for a X800GTO^2 (if they ever come back in stock @ $199 :| )
3) Go straight for a ~$300 7800GT.

One consideration is that I won't be gaming that heavily till Dec. Anything that can run HL2, CS:S, D3, FarCry, GTA:SA better than my OC'ed mobile 9600 will do (not that tall of an order :p ). The real heavy gaming starts with FEAR and Oblivion.

Since your asking, I'm guessing money is an issue. If thats true get a x800GTO2. It's got a good bang for the buck when unlocked and overclocked.

Considering the games you are listing: If you have the cash get a 7800GT

If you can find the x800gto2 for under $210 shipped it might be the way to go if you don't mind the risk that you'll get one that won't unlock or that isn't a good overclocker. If not I'd say just bite the bullet and go for the 7800 GT. If you're a real gambler you could try the Connect3D x800gto that has been mentioned--it's going for about $170-180 and it would probably beat up on the 6600 gt, but if you could unlock it and overclock it to x800xt speeds it would be the sweet sheeba.

Muhadib : Money is always an issue - I try not to squander it even when I have a lot :p

Since the 6600GT is in high demand right now, I don't think the price will fall that much by Dec (say $25), whereas the 7800GT and GTX are dropping like rocks (~$60 drop since mid-Aug). So overall, I'll "lose" less with the 6600GT - barring the fact that I won't get ub3r l33t frame rates for just a little while.

I wonder if 1024x768 @ 4AA/AF @ 30+ fps is overly unreasonable for a OC'ed 6600GT to achieve?
