6600GT Overheating in Halflife 2

The topic pretty much says it all. My Leadtek 6600GT AGP is overheating ONLY in HL2 and Counterstrike: Source. It starts polygon tearing (I think that's what it's called) and the textures start to screw up. I minimize and go to temperature and it's running around 100-105C.

I generally play overclocked, so I decided to turn off ALL overclocking, letting the card cool down, rebooting, and playing again....Same stuff.

I play other games (BW2, BF2, Doom3, etc) and I play them overclocked for hours without any problems. But for some reason, HL2 and CSS last only about 15 minutes overclocked or not. It's odd because I used to play CSS with this card for hours and hours without any problems and it's only been doing this lately, which I think has to do with some of the updates (even though I turned off HDR and screwed around with the settings).

I've tried different drivers and video settings and resolutions, but that didn't work either. This is obviously not a cooling problem with my card, since every other game seems to run fine.

Any help?

source game really heats up cards, well at least it did with mine

then i got a better case and it wasnt bad

you need some intake fan in the lower chamber that can bring air to your gpu, otherwise it will just keep heating up there because it wont circulate air out..

so my suggestions consider front intake fan for your case, or also get a VF700

note the VF700 is highly dependant on case air flow, so if you get VF700 get the fan too

Instead of shelling out money for extra cooling, I would rather just buy a new card that cools suffiently itself.

Download nv temp logger: Link

Download RTHDRIBL: Link

Run both at the same time and watch your temps. If you do not overheat with RTHDRIBL, then your card's cooling is not the culprit, and the source of your problem most likely lies elsewhere.

I highly doubt that lack of airflow is causing you to hit 100C if your cooling is adequate in the first place. Inadequate airflow can account for a difference of 65C vs. 75C, but not 75C (which is about as high as an actively cooled 6600GT would be expected to reach on load) vs. 105C. If your airflow were that bad, you would be seeing other components suffering heat-related issues as well.

Pinpoint the problem, and if it turns out that you do have an overheating issue, your choices would be to RMA the card, reseat the stock HSF, install an aftermarket HSF, or get a new card. Keep in mind that physically altering the card will most likely void any warranties- check with Leaktek just to be sure.

well, my friend with a BFG 6600GT had to RMA his card after it died twice, he had no case fans ...

my card has seen 90's temp in my previous case (no intake fans)

my card never goes over 70 with the new case (120 mm intake)

75 is decent for a 6600GT

Probably the hsf isn't seated right...

my 6600GT hit 97'C under load with the stock cooler, i reseated it with AS5 and the load temp dropped a whole 10'C :)

i got a vf700cu after that, and my load went down to 62'C in summer. Now it's winter i don't load above 57'C...

holy crap, 100C or higher!?!?!?!? No wonder youre seeing artifacts - you're only like 10C away from where silicon starts to melt! An aftermarket cooler should help. When I had a 6600GT, i used a zalman VF700 and it dropped my temps to like 65-70C at load.
