In a little bit im going to upgrade my current rig (in sig) to an athlon 64 based gaming computer. Im going to get an nforce 4 mobo, not just because of pcie (which i know isn't faster than agp) but because of the updated features too.

Anyways .... i can't decide whether to get the 6800gt or the 6600gt. I don't do much gaming now except for at the occasional lan party, but if you look at the rig you will see why :). I hope to get back into gaming, and i'd like to play through doom 3, farcry, and hl2, and any games in the future. I don't want to have to do a large upgrade to my comp for two years, but i would be OK with replacing the vid card if i got a 6600gt now. I'd like to play them at 1280 (highest res my monitor can handle) with some aa/af, but more importantly, i want a card that will last into the future.

So, my question basically is, which do you think would be more future proof: a $400 6800gt pcie now (when they drop in price), or a 6600gt pcie now and another $200 graphics card a year from now?

my advice, get the best card you can afford now and dont buy one for two years. Then repeat.

That's pretty sound advice , I agree wholeheartedly.

i would go with one 6800GT, since it will let u b more future proof and u will b able to save up a lot more time and then get a HUGE increase with a brand new card in 2-3 yrs

they are a bit hard to find in the PCIe flavor though, i think EVGA has been putting the most out.

It would be worth waiting though, but again the choice is yours.

eVGA is a good maker also, just FYI.

I mostly convinced myself overnight to get the 6800gt, because i figured that its maybe 50% better than the 6600gt, but if i upgraded to a new $200 dollar card in a year, it would be at best 25% better than the 6600gt, which is still worse than the 6800gt, but ends up costing me the same amount of money.
