To make this simple.. a 6600gt can be mine for 117$. 6800's are 160$-ish. Which one is better bang for the buck? Btw, I'm a college student so bear with me xP.

The 6800 is quite a bit more powerful. If you can afford it, I would go for it... It may also be possible to softmod it (assuming AGP) to 16 pipes and OC it to near 6800gt levels...

I hear the the failure rate to softmod thoose cards to 16 pipes is like 40% and then some that do don't work right, I was thinking of this card to but then someone sugested a X800XL it has 16 pipes and is about the same prive and abit slower then the 6800GT but like $200 cheaper here in Canada.

6800 hands down - you can get one in the US for $180ish easily. If it's AGP it should soft-mod 50/50.

Last week when I was looking around for a new video card, I saw the 6600gt's for $135 and the 6800's for $149 at newegg refurbished. For only $15 more, I chose the 6800. Fast card, but the pipes wouldn't unlock.

But for a $43 difference, I might choose the 6600gt. If rebates are involved, I'd choose the one with the least amount of rebates :)

6600gt has faster memory so i think that means it can do aa MUCH more easily, but the 6800 can do higher resolutions. if u have a 17 inch the 6600gt is the way to go.

Maybe I should have said this before, but my max resolution on my stupid monitor is 1280x1024. This is why I need a mediocre card and not a top of the line 7800gtx (but then I would literally have to upgrade EVERYTHING, cause my cpu is alittle XP 2.4 T-bred :))

You should get the 6600GT. It outperforms easily the 6800 at that resolution but get one that has GDDR3 memory, mine overclocks till 607 Mhz = 1214 Mhz effective

Recommended: Gigabyte,XFX or Leadtek
