OK, I have had my system with my old 9200SE running for about a week and a half now. I can finally afford to get a better video card. I decided on a 6600gt, since I need decent performance at a lower price (since I will probably upgrade to PCI-e in a year or so).

Basically, I want to know of some of the better brands and places to buy them. I want a good card that I won't have any problems with. Preferably a good OCer, but I don't want to pay extra for it. Noise is not an issue (I game with headphones), so basically reliability and overclockability are the main criteria. Games are just a plus, so it doesn't matter much...

I see the eVGA 6600gt AGP listed on newegg for less than $220. I know this is a decent brand, but could I find it cheaper anywhere else?

Why don't you just wait till next year if that's when you'll be getting PCI-E? You can spend the money right now can just be used to buy some other misc. items
 
Look at my current card. It is a 9200SE 64 MB. DirectX8.1 compatible (barely). 200 MHz core, 166 MHz RAM (though I OCed it quite a bit). The thing is a POS. I sells for under $40 online. I want to start gaming on the PC, and the ony game I can really play is Halo at 640x480 with all the eye-candy turned off, and even that is a bit laggy.

I want something that will last at least a year, but not something that will break the bank. I have a pretty old monitor, so I can't really play at high resolutions anyway. 1024x768 is fine, but I would like some eye-candy and a steady framerate. I am also a game programmer, so I want a card I can do something wih. I have tried SM 2.0 on my old system (through the reference rasterizer), but it was too slow to accomplish anything.
 
a 6600GT sounds straight up your alley

thats what i have

i got the XFX only because it was on sale plus the dual DVI.

leadtek and MSI put out good AGP 6600GT's, and you cant really go wrong with eVGA either.

I just bought the eVGA off newegg ($217 after shipping). It looks like a decent card. It appears to be good qualiy and a decent OCer. I'm sure it will be a huge improvement over my current card 😀. Hopefully I will have it by Thursday!
