Howdy All,

I am looking for a video upgrade for my friend. She bought a Dell 4400 awhile back. After looking at the specs, the motherboards only lists AGP 4x.

What are some decent video cards that would work in her system? I see some 6800's listed at 4x, but not 6600GT's.

Any suggestions?

uh, the 6800's might be too powerful for the Power supply in that computer

i thought the 6600gt was 4x and 8x? yeah it should be...its listed as that on newegg

8x agp is backwards compatiable with 4x agp. It will work.

However, I think some motherboards are incompatiable with 1x/2x AGP, simply because of voltage differences. But you don't need to worry about that.

So you are saying that a 6600GT listed as agp 8x will work in a motherboard that is listed as agp 4x max?

Also, I don't see any 6600GT's on Newegg that are listed as 4x compatible. Can you post a link?

Thanks :)

8x AGP spec has been around for the last 2 years or so, they no longer make 4x AGP boards, just 8x.

A 4x AGP 6600 does not exist, but an 8x AGP does. The 8x AGP card WILL WORK in a 4x AGP slot.

Just order which ever card you want.

There are exceptions to every rule ;) I have experienced it myself. Voltage signaling issues are possible although uncommon. Most 4x cards were 1.5v, 8X is .8v, and some 8x cards call bullshit on running in 1.5v only slot. I had it happen with a 5800U on a Asus P4PE, simply would not boot much less run despite a beefy PSU, put it in a board using the AMD 8151 chip and all better, ran great in a nF2&nF3 too. Ran across another guy here that couldn't get his 800XT to run in the same board either, he bought a new board and troubles over. Probably a SNAFU by Asus but never-the-less.

Odds are highly favorable it'll be fine, but they ain't 100% like some seem to think.
