I'm running a new MSI 6600GT with drivers 76.45 and I average about 30-40fps playing counterstrike source at 1024x768. Sometimes, when the game is really busy, the fps drop down to under twenty and its kind of annoying since I just payed 200 bucks for it.
I'll post my 3DMark05 when I get home, I can't remember the score I got.
My system specs are:
the above video card
P4 2.66
ECS L4VXA2 mobo
1gig ram
monitor refresh rate @ 85Hz

I guess I'm just wondering if it shouldn't be running the game better or if it is a processor issue because that's what I was planning on upgrading next. Any suggestions would be great.

I also get medium to low FPS in CS:S, even though I play at 10x7 and medium/low settings with no AA/AF.

In HL2 I get better FPS with 2AA/4AF with high details.

Though I'm told that the Source engine quite substantially favours ATI cards.

Oh, and BTW, I too have a 6600GT.

AA and AF are both disabled. I know source favors ati but I can't help but think that a 200 dollar video card should be able to do better. Does anyone else think so?

that must mean you have a cpu bottleneck then me thinks, as CSS likes a fast cpu, but hl2 is not quite so demanding in that area usually.

Alright, so does anyone have any suggestions for me to try? I plan to upgrade my motherboard to an asus and buy an Athlon 64 3500 clawhammer. That would increase my performance wouldn't it?

Uhm, is there a Clawhammer for the A64?

And yes, it would increase your performance. Though the problem might still be there. The upgrade itself, however, is of course warmly recommended nonetheless.

I went from a 2.6c to a 3500 clawhammer (the 2.6c was overclocked to 3.0 if I remember right).

Huge difference. Not counterstrike but..in America's Army my fps would bog down to 14 on some maps (with 1 gig of pc3200 and a 6600gt w/ the P4). On those same maps, I get no less than 50 fps, with the highs much higher. I was planning to upgrade my video card after I got the new cpu, but I can play any map at 1280x1024 with no problems. You will see a huge difference by going with a faster cpu. I'm still in shock of the difference it made (its not like my 2.6c oc'd was that "slow").

OK. I'm an "inexperienced player" when it comes to hardware. :)

By the way, I found something. Is your card PCI Express? If so, check this out: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/2004-27gpu2_14.html

You'll see that the AGP version of the 6600GT has overall much better performance in CS:S than the PCIe version. At the bottom it says it occured when they updated the game to the [then] latest version. That should be it, both for you and for me.
At 10x7 without AA/AF, the AGP version has about twice the amount of FPS.
Something's not right...granted, the AGP one *may* have 256MB's of VRAM, but that should in no way account for such differences.

Hopefully it will be fixed; we should lobby for it.

For gaming... it's crap.

Let's not turn this into a flamewar: there is a poster here who has a problem and wants to find a solution for it.

And I'm saying his processor is the problem. Since it's a 2.66, I'm assuming it's a P4B with a 533 Mhz FSB and single channel memory. A 2.4C with dual channel memory will probably outperform it.

To Jeff and Insomniak:

Then why do I have a similar problem with an A64 and 6600GT?

Yes and look at the rest of your system compared to mine not to mention yours is oc'ed. That's what I think the problem is so I'll go about getting my new mobo and cpu. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: My current 3dm05 is 2934. what do you guys think in relation to my system?

Good question... I don't have a problem with my 2.6 GHz A64 and 6800GT... and I run 4XAA and 8XAF. What do you get in the Stress Test?

120-140 I think. But when I look at that test, it's like a different game to CS:S in terms of smoothness.

True... but any obvious problems would be visible in the Stress Test too.

How much RAM do you have?
