6600GT Fan Noise Problem

Over the last couple months I've noticed my computer has been really loud, and I've always figured it was my power supply, because of my overclocked intel (2.4C @ 3.2ghz). So I Set it back to 2.4 and it kept on with the noise. So I decided today to see what the problem was. I unplugged fan after fan until I found it to be my Video Card fan.

I have the AGP BFG 6600gt OC 128mb.

I have an 80mm fan attached on the bottom of my case parallel to the video card, and I have nothing in any of my PCI slots, so if I unplugged the fan from it, leaving on the heatsink, and have the 80mm fan facing, would that be enough cooling for it? Or would I damage the card by removing the fan?

Just removing the fan would be a bad idea. The stock 6600GT coolers aren't set up to handle anything but the stock fan inside the housing.

Either:

1- Peel back the sticker to get to the inside of the fan and drop some lubricant in there or
2- Pick up a Zalman vf700AlCu or NV Silencer.

6600GT AGP cards are hard to work with due to the HSI bridge. It rotates the cooler around and it hinders most if not all ability to change the cooler. Search around. I think one of the Vantec Iceberq 5s would fit.

Take the plastic upper cover off the cooler, disconnect the stock fan, and put an 80mm fan directly below your card blowing upwards.

DOH! AGP...no NV silencer. The Zalman fits though.

I put the Zalman vf700-AlCu on my wife's evga 6600GT, didn't bother grinding down the ramsinks since she's not overclocking. About 10c drop in temps.

Wouldn't the 80mm fan + the current heatsink without the little fan on on, be better than the little fan on the heatsink?

The small fan on your card is specifically designed to work with the stock heatsink, to put airflow where required. Just having another fan blowing at the heatsink may not meet the goals...

This will-

Or the slightly more expensive all copper model. Depending on your card, you may also need one of these-

There's also the fanless aerocool vm-101, which I haven't used, but which gets good reviews-

Cheaper at Newegg, but the pics are lousy...

You may still need a HSI chip heatsink... if your card doesn't have one separate from the main vidprocessor sink....

If this is your card, it already has the HSI sink-

and you might have clearance problems in a very narrow case...
