6600gt core clock speed?

I just got a 6600gt which was advertised as being 500mhz core clock and 1000mhz memory. I installed Everest and looked at the gpu specs and it says my gpu clock is 299. Shouldn't it be 500? Or is the clock doubled like the memory or something? My memory says 501 real clock, 1002 effective. So is the core doubled (600mhz), did I get ripped off, or is everest wrong? If your wondering, yes I'm a newbie. Please help.

Not at all... par for the course...

Most modern graphics cards "throttle down" during normal 2D desktop applications... there is simply no need to have your video card at 500mhz to run Microsoft Word.

Anytime you run a 3D application that needs the horsepower, your card will automatically jump to full speed (and when you exit, it will throttle down again).

This helps keep the card and your system running cooler when you're not gaming.

300MHz is the standard 2D speed for the 6600GT... it throttles up to 500MHz in 3D applications.

Well stated 🙂

Ok, I just figured that out. Thanks though, it is nice to confirm it. When it switches frequency, it doesn't change the fan speed. I though it would slow down for 2d and would slow the fan to be more quiet. It is just noisy all the time. lol Can I get some program to control my gpu fan speed?

Oh, should I get new drivers for my card. It came with 66.62 or something, and I see that there are newer ones. Is the highest number the one to get? Is it worth downloading the new drivers? With dialup the 17+mb will take forever. I maybe could get a friend with dsl to download it for me. Any thoughts?

There should be a nice speed boost from newer drivers since those are pretty old. I am having good luck with the 67.66's so far.
