6600GT and 300watts????

Hey, I'm new...yes....and i was wondering if i could REALLY run a 6600 GT on my computer. Heres the setup

P4 2.8hz HT non prescott (forgot what it is)
1gb 2700 ram
7200 rpm 120gb HD
2 PCI modems (one doesnt work...i should turn it off...)
1 printer (not usually on)
speakers...old sound blaster ones....
Radeon 9200 64mb
19" CRT flat monitor
2 small fans by cpu
1 large fan at end of pc
1 DVD-RW/CD-RW drive
1 CD-ROM drive
1 floppy drive
and a 300watt power supply

now before you all say...just upgrade your psu, i'd like to say...find me one that is 350watts or more and 4" AT MOST in depth...

I have a Sony Vaio RS420 and it came with a 300watt power supply. and i cant find a small PSU with more watts...

So would i be able to run a 6600 GT on my compy? I've heard you need a 300watt power supply....some companies say 350....My computer hasn't had any troubles so far, but would a 6600GT be too much for my PSU and compy?

Thanks

well "watts" dont mean all that much when it comes to a PSU. its about quality rather than watts. id rather have a quality 300 watt PSU than a 600watt generic.

what brand is your PSU?

If it's a quality PSU you should have no problem. I say go ahead and use it. I'm running my 6800Ultra off a 350watt Antec.

Yep, if it's a Quality PSU, 300W should be no problem. I'm running an overclocked 6800 GT (400/1170) on an Antec 300W PSU in a Antec Aria SFF case.

i THINK its something like Delta...but its a SMALL PSU....3 3/4" depth....thats crazy, and it barely fits too....

but yeah i dont know if its quality or not...it came with the vaio, which has been very nice and sony is pretty good quality (SOMETIMES)

ill check and see and post later

If it's a small form-factor PSU in a Sony VAIO, then my guess is you'd want something beefier or better quality. Then again, if it's a proprietary PSU, good luck finding a quality replacement with more juice.

Same here, 300watt Antec PSU. I have in my box an AthlonXP 2600@3200+, 6800GT and 3X200GB, plus 7K 70GB SCSI. No problem so far.

How about running a 6600GT on a generic 300watt with an otherwise lower spec system? I want to put one of these in my brothers computer, here are the specs:

AthlonXP 2600+ no oc
512mb DDR 2700 (256 crucial, 256 PNY)
Epox mobo with NF2 chipset, don't know the model number
80GB WD 7200
Old NEC 24x burner
Lite-On DVD drive
Radeon 9600 pro (might not be working correctly)
Generic 300watt PSU and Case (Raidmax I believe)

In case his 9600 pro is really broken, I want to put in a 6600GT AGP but wanted to make sure his system could support it.

OK, i have all the specs for my power supply WITH a picture included!

Specs:

Delta Electronics INC.
Model: DPS-295AB A
REV: 01
Input: 100-120V~/6A 200-240V~/3A
Sony P/N: 1-468-709-21
47hz-63hz
Output=295.4watts MAX
+5V/28A
+12V/17A
+5VSB/18A
+3.3V/13A
-12V/.2A
+12VSP/1.2A
+5V & 3V Total output power cant exceed 165W
+12 & +12VSP Total output power cant exceed 209W

Not sure if that helps, but thats what was on my power supply

Here's a pic of it...of course, its in the top left corner...

As you can see, i really have no room to put in a better one.
So now, with my setup, could i still run a 6600GT correctly with NO problems?
also, where would i connect a 4-pin molex connector? from the card to the...what? i see no open spots on the PSU, or any open LONG cords that could connect to a 6600GT.

If it is better for me to get something that doesnt use as much power, what should i get?

thanks

That PS should just about do it. The most important number is the A on teh +12 V rail. Even "quality" power supplies may not cut it if they skimped on that rail (I had the old Antec Sonata with the 18A PSU which simply didn't cut it for my rig for instance).

are you sure? look at that thing in the picture! its TINY!!! how could that have enough power???

consider everything from everything on my computer setup, the picture of my compy, and the power supply specs

i need to be 100% sure it will work fine with my PSU before i buy one....cuz if my mom and dad see that it doesnt and that i wasted 200$........holy crap am i in trouble........its crucial that i know if it will work or not....cmon, i need more opinions!!

but thanks for your answer KevinH....if i knew more on PSU's maybe i could understand you completely...but you make it sound like it might work...but im not convinced. but thanks again.

Well I cant' garuntee you on this hans. I"m just saying based on the specs it "should" work. However, if the manufacturer exagerated on the specs or the 12V rail is unstable ...that's something the spec sheet won't show 🙁.

It should be easily enough. The 6600GT uses roughly the same power as a 9800 Pro. I run a 9800 Pro, Northwood 3.2, 2x512MB PC3200 DDR memory, 3x7200 rpm drive, DVD burner and A2 value sound card on the standard Dell 250W PSU. If you want additional head room, considering disconnecting the CD-ROM drive.

yeah im considering that...i mean, it uses...what? 20watts? and its funny, because on my cd-rw/dvd-rw drive, it reads and plays stuff faster....so i dont even need that extra drive

now, should i disable anything that im not using to save power? and can i just disable the hardware without having to unplug it all?

thanks

and again...any way i can test if my PSU is stable? your dell might be more stable then my vaio....which i likely doubt.....but i wanna be safe....unless your dell is like a really nice one...then it might be better, but i dunno

hey i was reading up on the PSU stuff....are my Amps good for the rails they are on? apparently, having 20amps on the +12 rail is great. i have 17, so i assume its still good.

6600Gt dont require a lot of power, I would assume it would work fine, 17A on the 12V sounds fine, but I am not familier with that brand, most likly would work fine.

I've heard that they use either 45watts(xbit labs??? i dunno) on load...or up to 200watts (from anandtech)

so how much is it? i noticed that AGP cards use the +3.3V line, so is mine ok? am i ok to run a 6600 gt??? im so confused now!!!!!

...bump....sorry, i REALLY hate to post so many times...just i really need some help...if you cant help, just say it and ill quit posting on this thread.

What are you bumping for? I dont see a problem here.
First of all: It most likely WILL work just fine.
Second: Get a new motherboard and case.
