6600GT: AGP v.s. PCI Express

I'm behind on my hardware... what's the performance difference between the two?

I'm building a system soon, looking to get something cheap (under 600-700) but fast enough to play today's games at a decent speed.

I was previously looking at a Radeon 9800 Pro, but have been told that I should go for a 6600GT instead.

The price on a PCI Express model is about $175, while AGP is about $225. What's the difference?

The interface thats about it. No visible performance differences. PCI-E your more future proof and have SLI capabilities with the 6600gt.

Okay.. can you tell me a bit about PCI-E? Is this a new interface or is it compatible with PCI slots in any motherboard?

I am looking at getting an Asus A7N8X-E (Deluxe). Will that work with the PCI-E version of this card?

Thank you.

Nope

and it is not compatible with pci 🙂

PCI-E ver doesnt require a 6-pin power connector from the psu.

The AGP ver requires a 4-pin molex connector from the psu. The agp version should be clk'd slower than the pci-e version in terms of memory: 900 for the agp version vs. 1000 for the pci-e version. This may change from manufacturer to manufacturer.

XFX leaves it at the pci-e speeds on the agp versions. Also has dual dvi!

Look at thread #1 in this forum, with that budget you might make it to an A64 2800+ socket 754 system with 6800GT (AGP) if you wait a few weeks for the 6600GT to drop a little in price.

A PCI Express GPU will not fit in a mobo with AGP and since it is a gaming PC you are building AMD would be the best choice whicvh don't have PCi Express mobos yet. They are right around the corner though but PCI Express itsself does not privide any real performance gain.

As I said most agp 6600GT's ram is clocked 100mhz slower than its pci-e counterpart. If you think that isn't going to give it a boost in performance guess again.

Was just reading this topic and noticed the comment on AMD Mobos being unavailable for PCIe. Asus has their AN8-SLI out with dual PCIe x16 slots for socket 939 AMD. Don't know if was available when the original post went up?

Good luck finding one. They're "out", technically, but not really available.

I have seen some PCIe mobos (like the Intel 915PBL in my wife's new PC) that recommends that a 4-pin molex be plugged into a connector close to the x16 slot if you are using a graphics card the draws more than 75W. The PCIe Shuttle XPCs also have an extra power connector that feeds directly from the PSU to the PCIe slot. I'm not sure how the nForce 4 boards handle it, but so far a lot of PCIe boards you still wind up plugging an extra PSU connector in somewhere - just not into the card.

If you narrow down your choice to the 6600GT, you can apply the AGP/PCIe price difference toward the price of a new PCIe motherboard, which could last you a while.

Asus says the way they handle the power issue without added PS connectors is by populating the board with the PCIe regulators immediately adjacent to the slots. The voltage drops all occur in the pre-regulator current supply (really pre-regulated, since it will start as the next highest PS voltage; 5V for 3.3V and below; 12V for anything higher the graphics card needs).

Anyone know if XFX inscludes a DVI -> VGA adapter in the box?

Thorin

I bought one, and it did not include an adapter that I can remember (I did take it out of the box to inspect it, but I haven't put it in a machine yet). I'll double-check tonight.
