6600GT-AGP, buy now or wait?

I am in the market for a new videocard to replace my FX5700 card. I only want to spend around $200 or a little over. In that price range, the Nvidia 6600GT-AGP is the best card in that price range.

I have a couple concerns before buying the card. With ATI releasing their new AGP mid-range X-series card soon, I don't know if that card might out preform the 6600GT or at the very least, might drive prices down. Also, with the card being so new, not sure if I should wait for more top OEM companies to make a card of thier own, or buy the Chaintech version. I like Chaintech because my current card is one and never had a single problem from it.

So basically, should I go ahead and buy the card, or are t here reasons to wait until after Xmas?

I say you wait until prices go down for the 6800 line of brand cards. And I think ATI scrapped their X700 AGP so perhaps we won't be seeing an ATI card that can challenge the 6600GT until maybe spring or summer. I recommend getting a LEADTEK6800 NU if you're on a budget. That card is awesome and the massive heatsink will keep your card nice and cool.

In short: wait until AFTER after Christmas, that being February and March.

I would get the NVidia but I'm openly biased to NVidia, so keep that in mind. You seem like a person why keeps video cards for a long time and IMHO ATI is better if you change often.

It sucks that people more or less openly rob you for $50 on the 6600GT AGP right now, but what can you do. Maybe squeeze out $50 more and get a 6800 but I know, easier said then done.

I too prefer ATI, but it was just happen stance that my last card and the card I am look at right now are Nvidia. I also don't keep cards super long, about 12 months on average, but I also don't buy top end cards either, mainly the mid-range cards in the $150-$200 price range. Only reason I am spending a bit more this time is I am getting a new Dell 2001FP monitor for Xmas and need a bit more powerful card that can handle 1600x1200 resolution. Is the 6800-AGP worth the extra $50 over the 6600GT-AGP? The benchmarks I have seen so far say no, but always looking for a 2nd opinion.
