Hey guys. Does anyone have any word on when the 6600GT 256MB AGP cards are coming out.? Or on another note, are they even planning to come out with 256MB versions for AGP?

are you referring to the dual gpu 66gt from Gigabyte? I believe that is a 256MB 66gt but that won't be out till jan.

The 256mb would be wasted IMO because of the 128bit bus so it really doesn't matter if it comes out

Well, I was looking to go with one of these newer generation cards. Time for more research!

What's your budget?

imo, the 6800 is the entry-level card to really use the extra vram . . . .
(in other words, if the 6800 Standard 128MB was close in price to the 256MB version, i'd pick the 256) 😉

the 6800GT is considered the best bang-for-buck (around here anyway) . . . .

Well I was hoping to spend about $250 and wanted 256MB onboard.

I really only plann on playing on the HL2:Source engine for all my games and not sure if the 256MB would come into play down the road for it.

oh there is that *fake 6800GT from asus, it has 128mb of DDR clocked at 700mhz instead of DDR3 at 1000mhz, it's priced a little higher than a normal 6800, so basically a 6800 with 16 pipes

oh btw, is that dual gpu gigabyte card on AGP or pci-E???

OUCH!

i know the BFG 6800OC was $250 after MIR at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago . . . .

if the difference is that much, i'd just go for the 128MB version (unless you game at high resolutions)
(or else just save up a bit more for the 6800GT)

256MB onboard a 6600GT or 6800NU is pretty much useless (search for multiple threads where this has been discussed recently). Even at high resolutions. It only makes an appreciable difference at 1600x1200 with AA/AF on, and these cards are too slow to run at those settings (at least with newer games) and still get decent framerates.

It might help if you want to play something ancient (like counter-strike or Quake3) with all the eye candy on at 1600x1200. But that's about it.

I think 256mb on a 6800 does have its uses in certain games with high resolution.

256mb on a radeon9200 or something is just plain gay 🙂

Ah, well I was just worried that as time goes on they would push the Source Engine to the limits like they did for the original HL engine and the 256MB would come in handy.

The 256mb would come in handy except for it only having a 128bit bus.

So placing 256MB on a card with 128-bit bus is a waste?

Have you considered an ATi card? If you are serioulsy only going to be playing HL2/Source games, ATi might be the better option for you.

I have considered ATI as well. I was looking forward to the X700xt for AGP but that isn't coming. The only other option I see is the X800SE.

Heres the link:
X800SE

But I don't think that card stacks up against the 6800NU.

From what I have read it is a waste to put 256mb on a 128bit bus

It's severely limiting the bandwidth or transfer rate of data from the RAM to the Core of the video card. You'll have a lot more storage for instant random access, but not a big enough highway to get it to the core fast enough.

this debate is the reason why i like the new methodology of the new 6200 design
instead of lotsa slow mem why not 1/2 the mem at 2x or 4x the speed (not mhs but sheer bandwidth)

i might just get a 6200 cause i'm cheap and the system it is going in will be dual chan pc3500

edit: those turbo cache ones that is if agp and under 200 bucks

This will be something I will have to remember. New Technology everyday. It's a smaller high way, but with a faster speed limit. Ugh.

if they could make an agp version with 32MB or 64Mb of ddr3 256bit crap i'd buy it in a second

I googled 6600GT 256MB and here's what I found:

PCI-E Version

AGP Version

The PCI-E version got a 3DMark03 score of 14478 and a 3DMark05 score of 6243 which are kick ass scores!! Neither card is available in the USA yet; Nvidia has to counter ATI with it's coming January 05 release of the X800XL 256MB DDR3 16 pipe with a list price of $299 and I expect it will be the 6600GT 256MB.
