My current system is Athlon 64 3000+ with 1GB RAM and a Radeon 9800. My little sister is having surgery this week (ortopedic, nothing life or death) and has a Athlon XP 2200+, 768 MB Ram and crappy 32MB integrated video (some SiS chipset, I think). I want to suprise her when she gets back by putting the 9800 in her computer. She likes gaming, but is pretty much limited to CS on her box. At least this way she could play the Source games, and UT2K4.

Would it be worth the $170 for the 6600 GT? Or can I do better for the money? Anything I buy needs to be less than $175, and AGP. I need a little bit of a boast to play Battlefield 2 at a higher framerate ;)

There is a difference for some games.

BUT

If your someone sticking at resolution 1024x768.....you wont notice a difference most of the time.

But i tend to like more nvidia card because of digital vibrance and better drivers.

Why dont you get her an ti 4600 if she only play ut 2k4 and source?

Coomar: Those results are frighting. And my processor isn't even close to the test setups.

I don't know if you can get new 4600s anymore. And are they DX9 capable? I'm not much of an eBayer.

At first, I was going to get her a FX 5500, but my 9800 is starting to show some age, so why not get the both of us a gift :D

I just ordered this 6800 yesterday (refurbished): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814122193R

They have refurbished 6600gt's for $135 and new 6800's for $189.

That actually sounds like a really good idea. I have no problem with refurbs.

You may not notice any difference. I agree with getting at least the 6800 which is already better, and then trying to unlock the pipes.

I wonder if refurbished parts were returned as the pipes did not unock...

seems there is quite a bit difference from a 6600gt to a 9800 in bf2

LOL - bullsh!t. gf5950 22 fps 9800p 4 fps. Im running an OC'd 9800p on a 2.4ghz Barton, 10x7, High textures, terrain and filtering, everything else medium, with 4xAA, and in the demo I'm averaging 40-50fps. Gamespot just lost all credibility to me. (Meh, I never liked them much to begin with...)

Tell me about it. My 9800Pro gets way above 4fps on those settings.

I've got to order within the next couple of hours. I'm probably going to go with a 6800 refurb. Best case scenario, the pipes unlock and I end up with a 6800GT for $150.

Otherwise, I jump from a 9800 to a 6800, and my sister jumps from integrated to a 9800.
