6600 GT vs 6800 GS

Is it worth the extra money to purchase the 6800gs? I mean mostly the game I play is CS 1.6 and I realize that the 6600gt is more than good enough to play that game. However I am starting to get more into games like BF2, NFS MW, Gun, etc. If the 6600gt runs those good enough then I can just save the money right now and eventually upgrade to the 7800gt I suppose. I just don't want to have to upgrade soon if the newer games are not going to be able to be supported by the 6600GT, because if that was the case I'd rather spend the money now and then not have to upgrade for some time.

lol, for CS1.6 a ti4200 would be more than adequate. Ffrom what you say i'd go with the 6600GT.

I'm not sure what 6600GTs are going for these days, but if there's less than a 50 dollar price diferential, go with the 6800GS. It's a steal at 200 bucks.

Sounds to me like he is playing older games on an older system... does he have AGP or PCI-E? If it's the former, I still haven't even seen the 6800GS available yet.

I'm building a new system for the newer games that will most definetly come out. So my mobo is going to be PCI-E.

The difference is 70 bucks.

If you're starting to get into games like Gun, go for the 6800gs. Also the new HL2 game is coming out next year, and NFS:MW can really eat up your video card. They'll play on the 6600GT, but not much eye candy at 12x10. Otherwise, spend the difference on RAM, that'll probably help you the most with BF2.

Okay well hopefully right after the hollidays there will be some sort of sale and these could even drop to 189.

I'd say, if you even want half of a fighting chance to play newer games that come out, and want to play at decent resolution (1024x768 w AA) then GS bare minimum.
More pipes, more ram, more bit/bandwidth and o/c's like mad (so I hear).
GS, GS, and oh yeah, GS.

By the time you spend half the money on the XT, you may as well go the extra half in my opinion on that. I look at the specs it was right there with the 6600gt.

Depends HOW future proof u want it to be.... my sysyem with Leadtek 6600GT plays ALL current games inc. NFS:MW, FEAR @ decent graphic settings and good frame rates - never below 30fps for fear.... and about 40-50fps for NFS:MW...

So, cud be worth u getting 6600GT especially if you plan on getting a beast like a 7800xxx in the future....?!?

lol a 6800XT is like an le - it's just an 8 pipe 6800!!! The 6600GT will beat it easily!!!! Overall, I'd go for a 6800GS - extra speed and memory will help things last just that bit longer, and worth the difference in price, but only just. Both are good value for money, though, and in cost per frame-rate, the 6600GT is better value.

The 6800XT has the same number of pipes as the 6600GT... only it's clocked slower. At stock speeds there is little differance between the cards (in fact the 6600GT is a bit faster).

Read the whole thread and you will realize I said it was $199 already at least on most sites. That's why I was hoping for like a $10 buck price break after the holidays.

for the record cs1.6 ran great on my schools onboard at 1024x768 or 800x600 except with the smoke.
