6600 GT AGP woes

hello all,

my setup is as follows:
SHuttle SK83G SFF case (240W PSU)
AMD 64 3000+
2x512 PC3200
120gig SATA HD
DVD burner
evga 6600GT AGP 128MB

the 6600 is brand new. I just installed it.

I was worried that the 240W PS wouldn't be able to handle such a card, but lots of google searching told me that it would be OK.

the games I play (Freelancer, Beyond Good & Evil) choke and hiccup every now and then when they didn't before (with my older 9600XT). evga turns off their GPU temp diodes by default, so I don't know how to monitor the temps.

additionally, the HSI heatsink gets REALLY hot (i actually burned my finger on it).

anyone know what's up? Is it the PSU? Is there anyway to divert more power to the video card?

_______________________________________________________

*update* ok i re-seated both heatsinks and put on some new thermal goop.

games still run like crap.

the air coming out of the GPU fan is nice and cool, but i;m still getting poor performance... :(

*update* 2/2/06 3:30PM EST
For those of you have use this card (agp version), did all of you find the need to replace the stock GPU cooler? Should I contact Newegg and/or eVGA about this problem?

Better airflow? Try using a high flow fan, and change the front fan to suck.

so have u installed coolbits? after installing check nvidia driver panel for temperatures

240PS if its a no brand PSU it may not be enough. IF its a good brand like Forton, Antec then it will be ok.

Yeah but a fritzed out PSU will usually just crash and burn, rather than causing stuff like this.

The last cheapo PSU I had smelt like burning and sure enough it went up in smoke. Thankfully I saved my rig, but I've never used anything but a quality PSU since then.

i installed coolbits, but i'm still not able to read the temps.

the PSU is a Shuttle PSU.

is the fact that the HSI heatsink is REALLY hot important?

Sounds like a heat problem what's your mobo say temps are when gaming?

You may want to buy a nV silencer. Serves three maybe four purposes. Get more air out the case.. runs cooler and quieter.

I don't think it's the PSU Shuttle is way underated and i've seen people SLi 7800GTs in them.

unfortunately, they don't make nv silencers for 6600GT AGP's... besides, it wouldn't be able to fit in this SFF case anyway.

the air that blows out from the GPU cooler seems relatively cool, yet the HSI still burns my fingers off.

are there aftermarket coolers that cool both components?

6600 GTs are hot. My EVGA 6600 GT PCI-e w/stock everything hit 94C when gaming. However, with a Thermalright V1, and when overclocked to 600 core/ 1230 memory, it would load @ 57-61C. Huge difference

I was going to recommend zalman vf700 but i think your agp bridge chip may get in the way.

Your PSU is enough if u dont experience any random resets/locking up when u playing intensive games. If its just hitching then temperature seems more likely. How about taking the side panel of case and maybe a desk fan blowing into it, see if hitching stops.

Or maybe heatsink isnt properly seated. Try removing heatsink, clean, and put artic silver then install heatsink again.

No room at all for card to breath.:( And of course no room for anything aftermarket like nv silencer.

I'm still not saying with any certainly it's temps though until you telll me mobo temps. But I lean this way.

here are my temps:

mobo : 40 C
CPU : 39 C
PSU : 52 C

*EDIT* oh, and my cover has been off the entire time. I didn't put it back on after installing the card.

High but not real high. I'd take cover off and point a small room fan at card on low speed and see if card is still acting up - if it is you know its the temps. May have to underclock card or do some mods to side panel so card can breeth.

it really seems to me that the only thing getting really hot is the HSI.

i feel no warm air coming out from the GPU fan.

k i have the same card as you and ive burnt my finger on it to i just got FEAR and that game runs perfect with all settings to high and soft shadows off but does the card ever get hot i have to have my window open comp on top of my desk as aposed to in its little door thing and the side panel off just to play the game for more than 5 minutes.. also the cpu will over heat easily on this game but so far its the only one to do it doom 3 and unreal tournament 2004 do nothing but cause it to get hot i do have a question what does it run at while idiling because just doing this i havent even done anything but turn my cpu on and go on here it is running at 55 degrees havent actually checked what it runs at during a game mostly due to the fact i have no idea how but running that high worries me since its standard shut off is 140 and at idle its already 55

Did you have an ATI card installed in the same machine before installing the 6600? If so, did you completely remove all the ATI drivers before installing the nVidia drivers?

no actually before this card i had a fx 5500 64 mb and it worked fine not nearly as powerfull and couldnt run half the games plus ive formatted twice since and installed the drivers from both internet and stock cd but its the same program so no difference could it be the fan or possibly because its agp on a not so new motherboard i have been forced to put my usb 2.0 card right under it with only a maybe 1 1/2 inch clearence between fan and card

ps thanks for quick reply
