6600 256mb AGP good idea?

Ok my girlfriends computer has that agp 4x slot that wont fit an 8x only card (it has that 2x slot in there) I did little research and ended up getting a chaintech 6600 256mb agp

Could I have done better? or is the older 2x/4x slot bandwidth limited anyways... she currently has an old radeon 7000

I couldnt find any 6600gt s or 6800s that had the [_____| |__| |_____] slot
They all had that [______________| |___] 4x/8x one... and to think of it I dont think i even really looked into any ATI cards.

Its mainly to finally let her comfortably play the sims2 as other than that, she uses it only for the internet.

That's fine for what you need. People play many of the modern games on stuff like that and since it's not being used for those heavy games anyways you got a good buy there.

I think all the current agp cards would work with 4x AGP slot.
In fact, I have used both a eVGA 6800GT & a x800xt PE in a 3 year old P4 RDRAM system with a 4x AGP slot, and 3Dmark05 turned out reasonably well, so I don't think the 4x AGP is really limit the cards either.

its an older 1x/2x/4x slot... nobody at work seemed to get this either but the agp slot on her board has a divider in it that doesnt allow an agp 8x only card to fit in it.

it may just be a 1x/2x but it does fit my old ti-4200 4x in it.

She has a "keyed" agp 4x board not a universal AGP. ok... thanks for the input and wouldnt mind more.

i know i put a old radeon 7000 card [_____| |__| |_____] into a modern 8x agp slot and it works fine. Old board like yours probably had dividers so probably not backwords compatible.

Actually its just not forwards compatible. I just had to find a card that had that specific agp key slot.

Another note is that after actually doing more research I find that people are recommending the 128mb version instead of the 256mb version... then again i dont think it really matters in my case. im definately bulding my GF a new rig and the old one with the 6600 is going to her little brother or something. he currently has an emachines with an mx440

I have about ~$900 budgeted so far for her new rig and new mobo/cpu for me (bought 6800gt for $200 from a coworker). So its just a get-me-by card for now and her old puter is most likely gonna get handed down to her brother who is a fan of the rainbow six series of games... plus the pci-e versions of the cards seem to be cheaper than agp models nowadays.

as far as I know... this card will handle any of the rainbow six series at max settings.
