A trip to the doctor recently brought a 66-year-old Chinese man more than medicine when doctors discovered "he" was in fact a woman, according to the South China Morning Post.
The woman had visited the hospital complaining of a swollen stomach when doctors discovered she had a cyst on her ovaries ovaries she didn't know she had.
It's the type of information you might not expect to receive after retirement age, but the unnamed patient in a case reported in the Hong Kong Medical Journal had a rare combination of conditions that meant she looked like a man, according to the story. She was even able to grow a beard.
The newspaper reported this was one of only six past documented cases in which a patient had both Turner Syndrome and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Women considered 'normal' have two complete X chromosomes.
Women with Turner Syndrome, however, are missing part or all of one of those chromosomes, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
As a result, adult women with Turner Syndrome don't develop as much as other women after puberty. They might have small breasts and as in this case, they often can't have children.
About one of every 2,000 females born have the condition, according to the library of medicine.
