WASHINGTON (CNN) -- After more than three years of combat and nearly 2,400 U.S. military deaths in Iraq, nearly two-thirds of Americans aged 18 to 24 still cannot find Iraq on a map, a study released Tuesday showed.

The study found that less than six months after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, 33 percent could not point out Louisiana on a U.S. map.

The National Geographic-Roper Public Affairs 2006 Geographic Literacy Study paints a dismal picture of the geographic knowledge of the most recent graduates of the U.S. education system.

"Taken together, these results suggest that young people in the United States ... are unprepared for an increasingly global future," said the study's final report.

"Far too many lack even the most basic skills for navigating the international economy or understanding the relationships among people and places that provide critical context for world events."

The study, which surveyed 510 young Americans from December 17 to January 20, showed that 88 percent of those questioned could not find Afghanistan on a map of Asia despite widespread coverage of the U.S.-led overthrow of the Taliban in 2001 and the political rebirth of the country.

In the Middle East, 63 percent could not find Iraq or Saudi Arabia on a map, and 75 percent could not point out Iran or Israel. Forty-four percent couldn't find any one of those four countries.

Inside the United States, "half or fewer of young men and women 18-24 can identify the states of New York or Ohio on a map [50 percent and 43 percent, respectively]," the study said.

On the positive side, the study noted, seven in 10 young Americans correctly located China on a map, even though they had a number of misconceptions about that country. Forty-five percent said China's population is only twice that of the United States. It's actually four times larger than the U.S. population.

When the poll was conducted in 2002, "Americans scored second to last on overall geographic knowledge, trailing Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and Sweden," the report said.

The release of the 2006 study coincides with the launch of the National Geographic-led campaign called "My Wonderful World." A statement on the program said it was designed to "inspire parents and educators to give their kids the power of global knowledg

# Fewer than three in 10 think it important to know the locations of countries in the news and just 14 percent believe speaking another language is a necessary skill.
# Two-thirds didn't know that the earthquake that killed 70,000 people in October 2005 occurred in Pakistan.
# Six in 10 could not find Iraq on a map of the Middle East.
# Forty-seven percent could not find the Indian subcontinent on a map of Asia.
# Seven-five percent were unable to locate Israel on a map of the Middle East.
# Nearly three-quarters incorrectly named English as the most widely spoken native language.
# Six in 10 did not know the border between North and South Korea is the most heavily fortified in the world.
# Thirty percent thought the most heavily fortified border was between the United States and Mexico.

I know where it is if I look on a map. It will say Iraq or India. :)
If it doesn't have text I can find India with 100% confidence. Iraq on the other hand, I'll have a guess a bit. Same with Israel, but I do know roughly where it is.

I wouldn't know what the most commonly spoken language is, I'd guess chinese but I'd prolly end up being whatever language is spoken in India or Arabic because people often classify mandarin and catonesse as seperate languages. Also I wouldn't be able to get the border question unless it was multiple choice just because I wouldn't think about Korea

Half of high school students can't find the US on a map, so this isn't too shocking. This is also the reason no one cares about Darfur.

I absolutely believe it. In my department we get many people right out of tech school, and their ignorance of geography is appalling.

I would bet $1000 right now that if you took our three newest hires and let them work as a group, they could not identify all 50 states correctly using a map that only showed outlines.

We had one guy go to Cleveland (2 hour drive) and couldn't find his way back by simply reversing the directions. He had to call because he didn't realize if you took 76 West going to Cleveland, you'd need to take 76 EAST coming back.

I used to give people maps but gave up because they couldn't interpret them. Now I have to spell it out step by step like Mapquest does. Which is fine as long as no one ever misses a turn... but when they do, they are completely helpless and can't recover.

I have heard of this before. The level of ignorance saddens me.....

It just goes to show that nearly half the population has no idea where the US has been meddling for years. While they may say they support the troops, etc, they are just saying what others are saying and not actually concious of what they really are saying.

Iraq is right next to Iran to the East. Kuwait is on the South side of Iraq.

Syria, Jordan and Israel are on the West side of Iraq.

All of these are below Turkey.

People are getting dumber and dumber in America because everybody is okay to be mediocre right now. It will slowly make the U.S. a weak empire. :( Just like it did to the Romans and other great civilizations.

It's not that hard to believe when you consider something like 40% still believe Saddam was behind 911.

Ok, to all of those bashing, first realize that no one in this thread can label every country if given a blank globe. Second, I hope you at least realize why it's important that you know a little about geography (geopolitics etc)

I guess the current generation will be the last to be remembered in history as being sensible... at least the common American. I certainly won't say the same about the politicians. :p

It has two big rivers going through it. It's not hard. I find it pretty sad that people can't find Louisiana. I may trip up a little on a few midwestern states, but I can get most of them (we used to have geography quizes where you could only pass if you got them all, although that was a long time ago).

yeah, I'm not too surprised. You see things like this and think we're just getting stupider, that as a society we only care about celebrity gossip news. But it would have been the same or worse if the poll was taken in 1906. In fact you have a better chance of the poll respondents at least being able to read the question nowadays. This information has little or no bearing on an average person who does the average amount required to live day to day in some town in the USA, so WTF should they care.

I always find it funny when you find some big gaping hole in an otherwise educated person's body of knowledge. Like a person who's a Ph.D. candidate in engineering and has no concept of what time zones are, or a 25 y.o. pursuing a master's in a healthcare related field and you realize they can't read an analog clock. We all have little quirks like that, you just hope to God you don't look too stupid when it gets exposed :D

Sorry if I'm being mean but that is pathetic. Everyone should know exactly where it is and be able to point it out on a map. Knowing where Iraq is is an easy thing to accomplish. We recently fought a war there and we're going to spend more money ineffectively rebuilding the country than we did on the moon shot and yet you still don't know where the country is?

i see your point of view, but the countries they are asking about are well known countries that the US has ties with some how and people talk about just about everyday

whether it be the war in iraq
the crappy tech support from india
or the suicide bombings in israel

Err, Iraq is not any old country though, and I think that's the point.
The US has had troops in Iraq for years, and people still can't say where it is, despite the fact that (I assume) there are, or at least definately were, maps of Iraq and the surrounding area on the TV with some regularity.
