66 cents of unauthorized charges on my debit/credit card

I went out to dinner last night and total was $28.30. I tipped $5.00 for horrible service. I signed and authorized for $33.30. My online banking pending charges say $33.96. Is this worth bitching over?

I just feel that if there is a credit card usage fee, it should be disclosed to the customer or eaten by the company for the thirty bucks I otherwise gave them. If they're taking 66 cents from everyone who walks in and uses a card, that's a huge amount of $$.

Shouls I call and ask them to remove the charge or I'll stop the transaction from my bank out of principle?

Need more coffee to get rid of the cranky haha.

I'd bitch. I am super Jewish when it comes to money lately. That's probably why I have money saved in the bank for the first time in my life.

You mean you have been giving money to charity and buying trees for Israel?

A $5.66 tip is EXACTLY 20%. It's my understanding that many restaurants put a hold of 15-20% on the charge when they first run it (before you write in the tip) to make sure you have enough available on the account to cover a decent tip. That way they don't try and run the tip later after you write in the amount and leave, only to find that you don't have enough available on the account. They later adjust it when they get your signed receipt with the tip amount on it. Wait a day and see if they change the amount.

At first I was going to say bad handwriting.

Then I was about to call shens on first the horrible service and $5.00 left, when I saw this.

Not all of us are like that.
I hate the whole tipping concept. I only do it at Hooters and only when I get a smooch.

Yeah, I'm great with the tipping system, having worked in a restaurant and seeing what goes into service and whatnot, I'm pretty fair with tipping, based on what type of service it is in general (dine in, take out, delivery, etc) and then the quality.

But this whole bit I'm  at... bad service still nets nearly a 20% tip?! jesus I think I need to become a server and work wherever OP frequents. Can't wait to see what a good tip is.

nobody on ATOT tips for shit, they either go "uhhh, it's their JOB to serve me fuck tipping them!" or "hay, I went to China once, and they don't tip over there, so why the fuck should be tip here?"

I would cry if I was a server at a restaurant a good number of ATOTers frequented because I would be poor as shit.

Earn for your tips like you're supposed to or get a better job. Seems pretty simple to me.

So when it serves your purpose and the woman is hot is when you tip then you tip.

I dont care what she looks like (though I rarely see a bad Hooters chick) and my only purpose is a smooch.
Never have I worked a job where tipping was considered a requirement. I managed to get by. I also found incentive to work hard and get a better job.

As for the international issue: America is one of the few countries that has tipping and probably the only one where its considered a requirement. Most other civilization nations dont even know about the concept and few routinely engage in it.

Forget it. We've already had this dicussion a thousand times before on Anandtech and nobody ever changes their mind.

Why did you tip 20% for horrible service?

I wouldn't be surprised if OP was just making this up in order to get people arguing in yet another tipping thread.

You tip for take out??
1. Call the restaurant, place an order
2. you travel to restaurant, pay and leave with your food.

Where is the service here that is in need of a tip?

The 2-3 minutes the person spends on the phone with me going over what the specials of the days are. And the 2-3 minutes they spend getting my order when I arrive and making sure everything is right, then bringing it to me. When I "sit down" the server typically spends no more time helping me than when I get it to go. Both senarios they spent about 5-6 minutes of their time helping me. I tip less when I pick up because they don't have me at a table and have to come by 2-3 times to ask if I need anything. But either case I do tip. I'm not sure how you think, but if you call the order in, it does take the person time to take your order on the phone, take it to the chef, and get your food when you show up. Seems like the exact same service you get when you sit down (minus the asking if you need anything a few times)

what's the difference between ordering on the phone or ordering sitting down? Both cases they take your order, put the order in and get you your food. Sounds the same to me.

Carrying the food out to me, providing silverware, a table, cleaning up after me, chatting a little... none of these really seem to happen which I pick up an order.

You have to tip at McDonald's too cus they wait on you until you're ready to order and help you with your order and hand you your food and there is someone to clean-up your table after your done eating.

That's why I said I tip less, they're still providing the basics of serving you. If I sit down they get more, but if they're going to spend 6 minutes helping me with my go to order, it deserves a tip. about 1/2 what I tip when I sit down. And when they're helping you with your to-go order, that's time taken away from their sit down customers. And could very well result in them getting a lower tip from a dude who's mad because he wanted another drink but the person was spending 5 minutes helping you and unable to assist him.

When I get food to go they provide me with silverware. And I could care less about the chatter as I know they're just doing it to try and get a bigger tip.
