I am a PC guy all the way and retty much hate macs. I took a 2nd job working at BestBuy recently and for the fun of it purchased a returned older macbook for a decent price. It did not include a magsafe wall adapter so I had to purchase one. The next day at work I noticed that we sell 65w and 85w versions. A coworker told me the 65 is for the macbook and 85 is for the macbook pro. Is this true? If so would using an 85w on a macbook cause any harm?

I think it's 60W for Macbook and 85W for MBP...at least the new one Apple gave me in place of my old messed up one is only 60W.

Apple does not recommend the use of 85W adapter on the MB.

It will work, but ask any EE major and he'll probably poop himself at the thought. It's just not good if you value your hardware.

The 60W will work no problem on the MacBook Pro though (it will take longer to charge), but not the other way around... sort of annoying.

It works fine. My understanding is that the MB only draws the wattage it needs from the larger adapter. I deliberately bought a MBP charger as a backup for my MB, in case I later decide to upgrade to an MBP. I have had no issues with it.

hmm really? i did ue the adapter for 4 days before i noticed but in that 4 days i didn't have any problems, nothing weird happened, the MB or the adapter never got hot or anything while plugged in and connected together but i wouldn't want anythign to happen to the MB. I have not charged it in 2 days now and it is about to die lol

Yeah, you can use an 85w MagSafe for the MB, but like others have said if you used the 65w on the MBP, charging time takes a lot longer since it can't draw all the required power.
