Are there currently any quality 650W PS's on the market? I checked Antec, and they don't have any above 550W.

pcp&c 510 turbo cool max's at 600 @25C if I'm not mistaken. Better have thick wallet though. Do you really need this?

As it is, a good Seasonic 460 or OCZ 420 would be leagues better than any generic 650W. What do you think you need a 650W PSU for?

Hmm, well. I'm considering SLI (2*6800 Ultra's) along with a AMD-FX, PC3200*2, 5 HDD's, 1 DVD-RW, SB Audigy 2, USB Devices, ETC........ Using the Power Supply Calculator, (which only let's you add 1 video card and 4 hdd's, I had to manipulate it a little to fit the wattage of the new system), it'll need aprx. 638W's. I doubt my 550W Antec TruePower will run it. I've already removed some components from the list to get it that low, so that's the final setup if I go along with it.

edit: oops, forgot I got it down some more :p down to 570W.

ocz and pcp&c are on the verge of releasing 750/850/950! watt PSU's which makes me chuckle lol. Amazing what kinda power is being drawn by pc's nowadays. Look at this beast!! LOL http://www.pcpowerandcooling.c...bout/index_whatnew.htm 850ETX
Personally I think you would be fine with a 510 pcp&c /ocz 520/ or even your 550 true.

That much stuff? Go for a PCP&C 510 or a nice Zippy/Emacs; you should be able to afford these if you're getting such an insanely expensive setup already. Wattage itself is means nothing, especially when you're using a stupid PSU calculator.

Wonder when that huge beast will be released

Your probably right about my 550 being able to handle it, because that calculator is the recommended at full load. All the HDD's won't be spinning at the same time to max out the PS like that. So I might try to keep the 550W and see how it goes.

I have the Antec True 550. This is what I've loaded it with, everything running. I was trying to find any instability.

2x SATA 74 GB Raptor, 2x SATA 200 GB Cavair, 2x PATA 250 GB Cavair, 2x Plextor 712a, K8N Neo2 Plat, Winchester @ 2.6 GHz, 2x 512 MB PC 4000 Ballistix, GeForce 6800GT @ Ultra, SB Audigy2 ZS, Linksys Wireless 54GS, 6 Case Fans, Bluetooth & USB Devices, 120W Pelt between two sinks for added load.

I did large file copying between two RAID 0 arrays 200 GB, 74 GB. rthdribl running to load the GeForce. Audigy running with effects enabled to load the SB. Media streaming to load the Wireless NIC. Prime95 running to put any additional load on the CPU.

That was on the True 550. To my amazment, everything ran stable. I ran this load for about two hours. So unless you think you're going to go over that, I think you're safe. :)

Thanks for the heads up. I think with that system able to run stable, then my setup should hold up. I'll give it a go and if any problems, I'll just remove some components until I get something bigger. The SLI is still only in the looks though, because I'm still debating whether it's worth it or not. If not though, then I'll definately get the rest of the other stuff, and replace the 6800U with a X850XT PE.

Newegg lists a 660 from Enermax a 680 from Thermaltake (seems to be the best value at under $200) and a 700 from Zippy. But I was beginning to wonder whether you needed to power a PC or an arc welder... The company that actually makes the Tt unit isn't the greatest, but it's not terrible either.
. If I remember right, SVC had at least one other brand with some units in this power range but I don't see a UL/RU or TUV cert on it so it wouldn't make my short list.

Is Enermax a pretty reliable PSU if it comes down to having to upgrade? Even if my Antec 550W can handle it, it'll probably be straining. We'll see how it goes and hopefully won't have to upgrade that as well, but if need be, then I'll probably get this unit. Thanks ;)

I'm running a similar setup (one less hard drive) on my 430 Watt NeoPower without issue.

Well people have run SLI on 450Watt PSU's before. But the sheer amount of components you are planning on using i think you would be absolutely fine with the PCP&C 510 Deluxe or the OCZ 520Watt Powerstream. The 600Watt OCZ is a bit of overkill but that wouldn't hurt either.

Other than that Zippy is about the only other brand i would buy for this kind of system. Antec simply doesn' thave a PSU rated that high... yet. Enermax although they are nice, they test there PSU's and rate them at 20C a temperature which is not realistic. They are not in the same league as PCP&C and OCZ.

I ordered a Zippy that should be in about wed/thursday of this week, I'll LYK how they stand up. BTW, it's the 700 watt, with the 45amp 12v rail.
I intend to build a dually later this year, and this will be powering it. :D

Not what it is rated to, it is what they are tested and rated by. They are tested under cold temperatures, not in a realistic temperature.

I would hope that a PSU can withstand 40C.

I'm curious, who or where does it say that they rate the operating temp accordingly based on a real life testing temp of 20 C? I've heard older Enermaxs being rated @ 25 C operating temp but never heard 20 C as a temp they test all of their PSUs at.
