650i Ultra

The thing is that the chipset may exist on paper (and inside nVIDIA labs) but the most important thing is that the mobo manufacturers dont seem to give a damn about this chipset.

I suspect its all about $. Our's not their's.

Yeh, they seem to favor the 650i SLi chipsets over the ultras.

I havent seen a single press regarding future 650i ultra products. Its a darn shame because not everyone needs the Sli feature. We want cheap, stable and feature rich motherboard. The 650i ultra seems to be just that.

Time will tell.

My thoughts exactly and I happen to be one of those people. I want to build another system, but SLI is not required for affordable and decent performance.

SLI just gives you another PCI-E x16 (physical) slot to play with - you don't have to use it for a video card you could use a RAID controller card, tuner etc.

650 Ultra really doesn't have anything to crow about that P965 doesn't already have. You can get really great boards with Intel chipsets for cheap, so what the hell is the point of 650 Ultra?

But you do have to pay for it!!

Becasue Intel needs to understand they don't rule the roost and Nvidia supporters have the right to decide that Intel is not the route they want to go. Also, just perhaps and I do just mean perhaps..The 650 Ultra might be just as good or even better (perhaps) than the 965. Certainly the 965 has nothing to crow about when it comes to it taste in memory. Forum posts are too numerous to count over memory issues with 965 motherboards. No inference here that the 650 is better, but I'm willing to give them a chance. Last thought, pehaps even if the 650 isn't better, the competition might actually lead to some Intel chipset improvements. Just food for thought.

Going the Intel route doesn't really matter that much in this case since you're already getting an Intel processor. The thing is there isn't a strong demand for it because most people that want good performance at a good price don't care what brand their chipset is; and since the P965 is already pretty established, it would be something of an uphill battle...on the other hand, I do think nvidia would have something to gain here, as most people do go for the mainstream parts and not the ultra high end, so even if the P965 does sell better, if the 650 Ultra is a better board (better memory support, better price/performance, better features, better overclocker, whatever), it should catch up. They might be working on it, who knows for sure?

& you believe that you won't be paying for any additional design/manufacturing work, or packaging or shipping /storing of an additional SKU?
I don't know what the chipset prices from nVidia are but if they are close as a manufacturer you could easily argue that the additional costs involved in a 2nd line aren't worth it.

😱 Digging up old posts because I've just "discovered" this chipset.

4x EIDE drive support. Doesn't seem like people are jumping for joy over using the Jmicron controller on most of the P965 boards. Many of us upgraders have at least various optical drives that are EIDE and it would be nice to have native EIDE support without any extra drivers or tomfoolery.
