I run Win Xp Pro on a Geforce 3 classic (gainward) and a Mag 800V monitor.

I play a lot of Marvel vs. Capcom in Final Burn Alpha (cps2 emulator), and the best resolution is 640x480, as it's basically full screen with the 50% scanlines, for arcade authenticity. As this res isn't availible in WinXp as a desktop mode, I can't figure out how to change the refresh rate manually (it's stuck at 85hz, my monitor supports 150hz at that res).

Any ideas?

85hz isn't a problem, but it's bugging me on principle.

Anyone else?

MAME seems to be defaulting to a 60hz (ARRRRGH!) refresh at full screen 640x480.

richleader, try an emulator called Kawaki. Games look unbelievably bettter with the filters on. Such as Sai, supersai, etc.

I've seen the filters, I use them on Snes9x, and while sometimes they are neat, 50% scanlines for an authentic arcade display really can't be beat. Anyway, I think you mean Kawaks, not Kawaki, but I'm really not a fan of it. If you want the most accurate emulation, Nebula is still the one to beat, but Final Burn Alpha kills in the interface department with the Kaillera client built in and an interface that looks great in windows xp.

yep- use powerstrip. You can lock the refresh rate for any screen res that your monitor/vid card will support. When you first run the game it will probably pop in at 85hz, and then a moment later, powerstrip will change it to 150, or whatever you select, and it will stay there until the screen res changes again. I'm not sure why nobody else has answered this, I thought it was a common problem...

GET POWERSTRIP HERE

What is the deal? I have the same problem. Why didn't they support it? Starcraft and Diablo 2 will only run at 640x480.

Thanks, I knew Powerstrip would do it, but then again, I'm not a licensed user (I've been with Nvmax from the beginning) so I was hoping there was a way around that. But there isn't, really. Took me a while to figure out that I had to save it as a preset but at the same time, I didn't have to hotkey it. Not exactly the most newbie friendly, but it works, though I wince whenever the screen goes black twice now because my monitor was on the fritz once.

Here's a question: Say most of my games are set to run at 30 or 60 fps, would it be best to set my monitor to 120hz, so each frame would theoretically be drawn twice, or for 159/160 hz, where each frame would be drawn 2.x-5.x times? Would keeping the ratio even add to the smoothness (which is pretty darn smooth as it is)? This isn't really a Quake like situation, as there's an expected and constant fps, so is going for broke in the hz department neccessary?
