I am building the following new system, and just need to decide on the ram:

cpu: q9300
mobo: ASROCK P45xe
ram: ?
gpu: 4870 1gb
HD: caviar black 640
case: ATX 300
PSU: OCZ StealthXStream 700W ATX12V

I know the difference is only ten dollars and one might ask why I even bothered, but I'm interested to know the answer.

Which is the better choice? Is the 8500 absolute overkill, or might it be useful if i OC the q9300.

The DDR2-1066 will certainly help with a better overclock but regardless I don't think the Q9300 normally overclocks that high anyways. I'm also a fan of corsair products in general so I may be a little bit biased.

Would it make a difference if my target is around 3.0-3.4 ghz? I realize that 3.5-4.0ghz is unrealistic.

It's barely any difference in price.
DDR2-1066 ensures you won't be limited by the RAM at all.
