The upcoming Galactic Civilizations 3 will only be featured for Windows X64.

This makes me cry. I understood one day all the games will feature only x64 release, but I'm scared that my x86 games will no longer work.

Uh, my 32 bit games run just fine on my 64 bit Windows 7. Not sure what your concern is. Long term incompatibility? Sure, but by that point we'll have emulators, hell we already have WINE. Those old 1970s/1980s 16 bit games? You can play those today. I don't see why 32 bit games will eventually be any different.

I'm just happy that the game developers finally starts to make software that take full advantage of the hardware available.

Welcome to 2006. Most games are still 32-bit while most gamers run a 64-bit OS. So I don't know what the problem is here.

I agree with this statement. Until every cheap Windows machine has 4GB+ of RAM we still need 32bit.

It took me a while to stop laughing enough to be able to post this post:

Don't they already? Aside from netbooks or something, I can't remember the last time I saw a pre-built machine at Walmart or Bestbuy with less than 4 gigs of RAM and 64-bit Windows.

All those budget Windows tablets are 2GB or lower and they are the most appealing product in the entire Windows lineup right now.

Yes, but new high-end games that require 64-bit Windows, 8 GB RAM and discrete graphics won't run on those Atom tablets anyway even if they took away the 64-bit part.

I am more upset about lack of universal linux/bsd support than I am about 64bit OS being required for new games (that probably want to use more than 4GB of ram)

Even they're starting to adopt 64-bit. Apple went with it in the 5S/IPA last year. I guess they're trying to do some future proofing ahead of the time when mobile devices do need more than 4GB.

The Windows Surface RT tablets? Aren't those running a tablet version of Windows 8 on ARM processors? I'm no developer so I can't say for sure, but I imagine that developing for entirely an different CPU architecture isn't any easier than moving from 32bit to 64bit x86 CPUs.

I guess I don't really figure tablets or netbooks into the PC game conversation.

Windows 7,8,2012,2008r2,XP x64 all run fine on less than 4GB of RAM. Can't fathom why this qualifies as a reason for a 32bit builds at all... Some run better since they can remap hardware out of the lower 4GB so there is less "lost ram"

I've been running 32-bit games on 64-bit Windows for at least four years now, and have never really had an issue that I can recall.

Just in case this isn't a troll thread, I was overjoyed when they announced it was x64 only. I'm a die hard strategy gamer and was so tired of seeing games limited by having to run 32 bit.

I would also say, the game itself is fantastic. Even for an early beta, I'm finding the game quite enjoyable and a minimal amount of bugs/crashes considering the current state of development they are in.

All those budget Windows tablets are 2GB or lower and they are the most appealing product in the entire Windows lineup right now.

Which won't run the games regardless of the x64 requirement, so that's moot. Hell the last "budget" tablet I bought struggles to just stream 1080p video. If you're expecting a 2Gb Ram Atom powered CPU to run the latest games, that's a bad expectation.

if your machine requires 32bit OS because its too slow/underpowered for a 64bit OS, its probably getting to the point where its too slow/underpowered for modern gaming anyway

There were only a few games that wouldn't run on WinXP 64bit. Usually because the Copy Protection scheme wasn't updated. Older hardware with no updated Drivers was the biggest with it.
