hello breaking news on CNN
wtf is happening there

"
At least 635 people killed, 237 injured as a crowd of Shiite pilgrims stampede on a bridge near a mosque in Baghdad, police say."

Same thing that has been happening for years...

You basically have a group of fanatical criminals..aka...insurgents who are for the
majority from the old Sunni/Baath party, and/or, the same kind of nuts but from
a different country, killing innocent people.

Why?

Because a democracy, or at least some semblance of an organized governing body
threatens their criminally charged livelihood.

From Yahoo link:
but police also said there were unconfirmed reports that the stampede may have been caused when someone in the crowd shouted there was a suicide bomber among them.

Earlier Wednesday insurgents attacked an annual pilgrimage by Shiite Muslims in northern Baghdad, killing three people and wounding dozens in a mortar attack.
The Shiites are for the most part, trying to make the new government work.
Several of their top clerics and religious leaders have called for unity and
for their people to support the new government, and most of all, end the violence.

Whatever caused the bridge to collapse...

Too bad it wasn't terrorists and anyone who remotely supports them on the bridge.

Really. And here I thought that the U.S. attack/occupation ushered in this garbage.

CNN is reporting the new figure at over 800 dead (mostly women and children) and over 300 wounded. Scores were drowned in the river below, scores were trampled to death. People on the bridge had nowhere to go because of a security checkpoint on one side.

Disgusting how so many civilian lives could be lost so quickly, and it gets about 15 seconds of coverage by the major media.

Makes me care a whole lot less about 80 dead in MS.

Well, according the american media, today's conversion rate seems to be 1 american = 100 iraqis. (there seems to be about 10 hurricane stories for every stampede story...)

There were like 150 killed by poison too, treats and tea were handed to the people on the walk and someone decided to add something to it.

May god help all the people...the bastards who do this are not human in my opinion; but t oolay the blame on something as stupid as a Sunni/Whiite split is ridiculous...

all the more reason to argue against a weak central government...

I read into it as nothing more than rabid mob mentality.

1000 very scarred people in an enclosed area. Children, women, and frail elderly don't stand much of a chance when 75 tons of fleeing feet step over the top of you.

Actually, I believe it is because a democracy allows for such criminal activity. Regular citizens would never dare misbehave in Soviet Russia or China. Government owns them, soul and all. Where as in a democracy people have enough freedom to become criminals. Sad bit of irony I find in this.

Critics said the authorities were to blame for a fumbled response to the disaster.

"This is a result of the inadequate performance of the interior and defense ministers, which has caused such a loss of life," said Baha al-Aaraji, a Shiite lawmaker affiliated to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

"They should stand in front of the national assembly and be questioned. If it is proven that they have failed to fulfill their responsibilities, they should be dismissed and stand trial," he said.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, told state-run Iraqiya television that "the government should take measures for an honest investigation to determine how failures doubled the casualties."

Would this lawfull assembly to practice religion or the criticism of leadership have ever happened under Saddams rule?

Many may have been able to swim, but the clothing gets heavy in water. On the other hand, maybe that many didn't know how to swim. Can't imagine that.
