$63 for renewing my damn drivers license online?

The government needs your money. You should not be complaining, just keep opening up your wallet. It is what you voted for so suck it up and accept reality. The "free" things governments provide actually cost SOMEONE.

License renewals and all that crap is nothing but a money grabber. It's sad really.

While I don't quite understand how they can justify *that* high price, they can certainly justify something -- the state needs to periodically verify that identity holders are alive, that their records are correct, and there is a cost associated with doing those things. I can't imagine that it would be that high, but then again, I don't work for that department...

That's what happens when a bureaucratic monopoly runs things. You get $5 worth of services for $63. If there was competition the process would work a lot smoother, and it would be significantly cheaper.

Arizona has a system for allowing private companies to administer DMV functions like plate renewals, title transfers, etc. It costs more to use these private entities than the government run sites.

So... create a system that does it more efficiently, and then give it to the state governments to use. No?

I don't know if it's like MD, we have something like that here. All it is is paying someone else to stand in line and handle the drudgery for you. The MVA charges the same amount to these companies, and the companies charge a bit to the consumer for dealing with it. It's still the MVA running the show though, so it's all the same overhead.

It's more like you pay $5 for $5 worth of services from the govt. The other $58 is pure profit ie. taxes.

Just another way of taxing. Suck it up. Taxation with representation.

2yr NYS registration fee coming up: $143.
annual inspection fee: $37
license fee not due for another 2 years: score.

I just did mine in August and it was $12... did you have a suspension? They charge you forty something bucks to reinstate after a suspension.

I think I wouldn't be eligible for a online DL renewal if I had my license suspended. Good thing tomorrow is Monday, I'm going to call them up and see wtf is going on.

True, the OP probably did vote for a politician in the last election.

They changed the fees on September 1, 2009. New fee schedule:

It says that regular llicense renewal is $48. I don't know what the other $15 is for.

The illegals in FL won't open their doors for the census people, you think they're going to go put their name on the government's books just so they can drive? They're already driving here without the license, what's the benefit to them? Why would they be compelled to get one?

Simply setup checkpoints. All those without licenses get deported. And some with licenses get deported too for good measure. In these troubled times Americans need all the jobs they can find, menial or otherwise.

Even if 10% of the several million illegals in Florida paid the sixty something bucks for a license, assuming we'd give them one, if you then setup checkpoints all over the place it would become cost prohibitive which would defeat the original purpose of raising revenue from the new pool of illegal drivers.

Holy run on sentence Batman!

You only need a license to get caught. 😉
