6150 -vs- NF4 mATX

I am looking at building a small pc for mainly graphics work including 3D. I have been looking at the NF4K8MC-ERS from Foxcon but the ASUS A8N-VM CSM looks interesting in terms of name. I plan to put either an Opteron 165 or a 3800X2 in it with a 7800gt. Is there a reason the Asus might be a better option?

I don't know about the actual Asus implementation of the board, but if you are overclocking I do know that the Foxconn can't do too much. If running on stock, get whatever has the features you want - if both the same aside from IGP, then get cheaper one.

If you do want to overclock, then look for a mATX board that has decent (for mATX) overclocking features such as the Biostars.

Depends, what you want from the board. I own the asus and I have to say it's still pretty buggy. The rear usb-ports don't work properly, they cause my wireless mx1000 to lag. I had to install extra usb ports to got it working. C'n'Q doens't work either. I have annoying coil noise in my motherboard. I found disabling fading from display effects to quieting them down a bit. My computer is pretty silent, with standard anadtech reader computers (blow dryer acoustics),it won't probably bother you, but on a low noise system they are clearly audible and annoying. People are also having other kind of problems, but maybe it is to be expected on a new motherboard/chipset. The mobo desperately needs a new bios, since the current one has so much issues. I don't like the bios anyway, it doens't give much options for user. No voltage adjustments of any kind, no cpu multiplier adjustment, HTT only up to 240. There are some adjustments there I have never seen before, but no explanation in the manual what they are supposed to do. I have tried overclocking with it. I was able to run 3dmark2001 (not much of a test, but I don't care much about overclocking anyway) my x2 3800+ @ 240x10 using 166 multiplier on memory. It didn't pass using 1:1 settings. I guess the mobo run out of memory voltage, or then the IGP didn't like the raised HTT, my crucial ballistix certainly wan't the limiting factor since I used loose timings. I passed the 3dmark2001 with 236x10 ddr472 and got 200 more marks then with 240x10 with ddr400. So it can do small overclocking, but nothing major.

If the new bios will tweak out the current bugs, I'd say this will be an excellent mobo for office computers, it has no need for extra add on cards. This mobo has lots of potential, but isn't just ready quite yet.

The 6150 Foxconn version, 6150K8MA-8EKRS, is one of the best mATX overclockers you can get. The Asus sucks for overclocking with it's 240MHz FSB limitation.

But after checking all the features, price, and availability or current mATX, personally went with Jetway A210GDMS Pro ($55 Newegg refurb), with integrated ATi x300 graphics. Has no problem running s939 Opteron 146 at 300x10 (3009MHz). Very pleased with the ATi chipset, even though I've been a diehard NF2 chipset user for years in HTPC's.

The Opteron is really a waste of money, unless it is overclocked.
Overclocked, and it becomes the best CPU deal around.

I've heard good things about the overclockability of that Jetway, plus the non-Pro version can be flashed with the Pro BIOS to get the same overclockability (YMMV). However, I've heard of driver/chipset problems, especially with the Southbridge onboard audio and SATA. Have you had any of those problems? Are those problems solved now?

I guess the Jetway would be the ATI chipset overclocking alternative to the Biostar Tforce board.

A major difference between Pro and Non-Pro is Pro version includes 32 meg of onboard dedicated video memory. For HTPC's, you can simply use that 32 meg, and then full system memory will be used for system, or you can share it as HyperMemory which gives you 32meg + whatever you assign for video I choose 32+128, and it actually does modern 3d games (without all the eye candy). Default (not tweaked yet) 3dk2k1se = 7062, 3dm2k3 = 1802. That puts in on par with about ATi 8500/9100, or a little better than ATi 9200's..

No issues here with onboard HDA (just made sure to only select Azillia HDA in Bios, and not AC97 and not both, then install HDA drivers). Works great. Much better than Soundstorm. But, unlike soundstorm, still no 5.1 S/PDIF gaming. Need to use Analog for gaming. Even with Soundstorm boards, I switched to Analog gaming with Audigy 2 anyway, so this onboard Analog is no different. S/PDIF for Tuners, HDTV and DVD passthrough works fine. Even TV out works fine when overclocked.

Sorry, didn't test SATA, but did see problem posts of booting SATA when overclocked.

Good thread on topic all mATX boards:

So, let's say I am not going to OC. What is the most solid MB offering? It sounds like the 6150 Foxconn is a pretty good option.
