Wait, they removed the EE and killed the backwards compatibility? Well, fuck that noise. I'll just buy another PS2. Congrats, Sony. You lose, again.
The $499 60GB still has EE which is still enabled.
But go ahead and buy a PS2 if you want the best possible PS2 compatibility and don't care about
- using the HD for virtual memory cards
- upscaling to 720p / 1080i & p
- PS3 games
- blu-ray
From what I've heard, it's gone down to a compatibility of 88% or something.
Software emulation actually could provide better benefits than running it from the old hardware. Remember PC emulators that could display the games in higher resolutions (not upscaled) with other graphical "upgrades"? The PS3 could do something very similar if all driven by software emulation.
Besides, the compatibility will be better with each firmware update. Sony has been pretty good at that.
In recent news, an analyst (Patcher) states that the 80GB model will drop to the $499 point when the 60GB is gone, and that a new drop will take place early 2008. I also read that the 60GB has some 2-3 million units available, and they're being directed to the US...so, depending on how fast people do or don't buy the PS3 (especially with the new price drop), the 60GB supply could last for a while.
