60gb or 80gb PS3

They are both the same price at Circuit City. But the 60gb comes with a free extra controller. The 80gb comes with motorstorm of course and they both have the 5 free blu ray movie deal. Now the question is, WHICH ONE!? I figure now would be a good time to buy and I've read that the 80gb has decent backwards compatibility. I was wondering, can the PS3 still play ps1 games? Which do you think is the better buy, I like motorstorm and was goign to get resistance so me and my buddy can play. Thanks!

Yes, they can both play PS1 games. If you don't plan on playing a ton of PS2 games, you'd probably be happy with either of them and not even notice a difference. The 80GB will probably save you more money since Motorstorm costs $60 and a controller is only $50.

Motorstorm and the controller are a wash. Its basically 20gb vs backwards compatability. You can always get a bigger HD later if you need it remember these are standard laptop drives. You can't re-add the hardware sony removed though assuming you find an older game you cant play..

And yes the PS3 plays PS1 games, well the HBC models anyway.

Most importantly though, the 60gb is the best choice because that is the one I have 🙂

PS1 compatibility is 100% software so should be identical for both.

PS2 backwards compatibility: (select 60 vs. 80)
Sony database

Going forward I'd predict the 80GB compatibility will improve some, since it's the unit still being made.

Yeah I thought about that too. But I could live without motorstorm and I NEED a second controller (at least).

In my opinion, the 60GB with hardware BC is a no-brainer. Especially if you're going to buy an extra controller, anyway.

Here's my question. I'm of the understanding that even though the 80GB model has lessened PS2 game compatibility, the software emulation will actually up-res your PS2 games....the 60GB model does not. Is that true, and if so, is the up-res worth it?

I'm in kinda the same boat right now. I'm in the market for a PS3, but I'm not sure if I want to get a 60GB with some kind of deal, the 80GB because of the free game and possible decent up-res capabilities of ps2 titles (all the titles I want to play are compatible with the 80GB), or just wait for the 40GB and say to hell with trying to play some of the PS2 games I've missed out over the past 2 1/2 years since I sold my PS2.

Decisions, decisions.....

I have no idea, hahah. I haven't really looked at anything about the ps3 besides some of the basics (and some articles that I run into every now and then).

I still have all my ps1 and ps2 games so I'd like to pop them in and enjoy them whenever I get the inkling. I'd say $50 bucks extra would be a decent price to pay for 2 more usb ports, 20 or 40gbs more space and BC. I'd prob be more sad about not being able to run through final fantasy 7 or vigilante 8 again whenever the urge strikes.

Anyways, I think a better deal is a 80gb off amazon. Since there is no tax, I can essentially get an extra controller + motorstorm and it'd be the same price as if I bought the 60gb from circuit city.

Ya, I thought about the same thing, but I'm one of like 4 states that gets charged tax through Amazon. Hell, I used to work at the warehouse years ago 🙂.

Damn, one more reason to go with that 60gb for you. I don't know about where you are but only one location has it in my area and it's almost half an hour away.

A local store has about 5 or 6 60GB systems that they've had forever, but they are the typical $499.99, no deals going on. That's why I'm more inclined to just get the free game while I'm at it. I'm sure if I actually looked hard enough, though, I could find a good 60GB deal.

I would('ve) jumped on the 20GB system that gamestop.com had in stock (not sure if it still is or not), but I'd like to have the wireless that the 20GB doesn't have. For $379.99, though, I could probably deal.

60gb upscans ps2 games and dvd movies to 1080i if you're using HDMI. Upscaled dvd movies look great. It's the best upscan dvd player I've seen. Upscan ps2 games look great as well. I've only played ps2 games on my PS3. I've yet to play or buy PS3 games because no game out right now is worth $60 to me. When you can pick up great new PS2 titles like MGS3 for $7 and Ace Combat 5 for $20, why even bother with subpar PS3 games at $60.

The 80gb doesn't do that?

Yes it does, the ONLY FREAKING difference is lesser BC.

Well, there are an assortment of around 5 PS2 games that I want to go back and play, and I've already confirmed on Sony's website that all of these games will not have any problems whatsoever with the 80GB. So in my situation, unless I can find a good deal on a 60GB system with a retailer that's trying to get rid of them, I might as well go with the 80GB since I'd get a free PS3 game out of the deal.

Right now they both upscale the same way. It's speculated that the newer models will be able to re-render in higher resolutions (assuming that's what you meant by up-res), but there's no solid basis on that right now.

60GB. i have the 60GB and i am SO glad i got it. no need to worry about software updates to play the latest ps2 games...i remember seeing god of war on my friends 80GB ps3 (or was it god of war 2) and it sounded like crap for some reason. we tested it in his old ps2 and my 60GB ps3 and it worked perfectly.

honestly...60GB (which you can upgrade to whatever 2.5" sata drive you want without ever voiding your warranty) + EE/GS chips = teh win. hardware emulation > software emulation.
