604 Xeon Back Plate?

Zilog

Junior Member
Hello, I require a little advice with an old socket 604 setup. I have these parts

Dual socket 604 motherboard ( 800mhz Rev 2 style )
Xeon MP CPUs
Genuine Intel coolers
CEK Rev 2 clips

But I do not know how to connect the coolers or how the CEK clips work. I have seen parts listed as "back plates" that I guess I may require but really don't know. If anyone can enlighten me on what is required that would be most appreciated, Thanks

That shows you how they assemble. Most other solutions for socket 604 are just a backplate that mounts on the underside of the board and the heatsink screws into that through the holes by the socket. On the Intel solution, the plastic mounting pieces bolt into the back plate, then the heatsink is held into place by those clips snapping onto the plastic mounting pieces. Arguably that's easy to use since it's "toolless" and you don't have to worry about over tightening it. But most of the time you need a screwdriver to get the clip off anyways. I'd rather just have the heatsink screwed into the backplate.

There you can see how the plastic mounting pieces are screwed into the backplate. If your board has the heatsinks and clips, it SHOULD have the backplates too.
