ePower/Tagan has had their rough patches. Their PSUs are based on Topower PCBs similar to some of the enermax so they should be decent.

Mr. Technica apparently doesn't understand that what matters is not the total watts being drawn, but having enough amps on each rail. With an E6600, Geforce 7950GX2, 1 hard drive, 2gb RAM, and nothing else, my 400W Sparkle powersupply would not boot up.

I don't get what you're trying to say? That you bought a low quality PSU with good power output instead of a high quality PSU with lower output?

Stick with the highly regarded companies (like antec) and you most likely wont need to get one with 900watts to power your 65nm athlon, 6800gt, and a cdrom.

Thats what i've gathered in my recent research.

Since when is Sparkle considered low quality, especially in comparison to Antec?

What merc was saying is that his 400W unit was ATX v.1.2 with probably less than 20A on the +12. I think the ArsTechnica thread discusses that the available wattage has to be distributed among the rails properly for a given system. So if merc's 400W PSU was balanced more toward the 12V rail as modern PSUs are, he wouldn't have had a problem. Of course, that's just common sense. My next PSU will probably be a 350W unit. Though my old-school Sparkle 250W unit with only 13A on the +12 is running my system right now, I'm sure it wouldn't power up merc's system either or mine if I added another HDD.

Topower units don't seem to test out very well number wise but they do seem to well built and pretty reliable.

Unless you really need 600 watts I would go with a more modest wattage class Seasonic, Forton-Source, Zalman (Forton based w/ improvements), or Enhance.

Well for a c2d on the way and 2 gigs ram a couple hard drives , cd roms AND some power hungry R600 im sure its better to be safe than sorry... But i dont want to spend too much money :) so $65 is the perfect spot for me.... but the thing is will that PS be reliable... and let me overclock my e4300 to about 3.0-3.2

And this is E-power is not Tagan... and i dont know if its made from topower pcbs :)...

I know Tagans are very nice ones but this with this price... im a bit skeptical.... even Newegg has them for cheap...

epower and tagan either are the same company or work closely together. Isn't Tagan a german outfit that takes the epower/topower units and tweaks them to their own spec.

Keep in mind it's in power supply manufactures best interests to sell you the biggest PSU you are willing to buy. But the fact of the matter is a good 350 - 400 watt PSU is enough for piratically any single CPU/GPU system.

Tagan represents the best of what Topower produces but thats really only average in comparison to FSP, Seasonic, and (the better) Enhance units. E-Power is several steps below the Tagan label so there is a reason they are so cheap.
