600M equivalent

Anyone know a 600M competitor? I.E. a sub $1000 laptop that weighs about 5 pounds and has discrete graphics. Everything seems to be either a DTR or have integrated graphics now (or costs a lot more than the 600M was). I"ve been thinking about replacing my 700M with something slightly bigger. I already have a 9300 w/6800 Ultra so hardcore gaming isn't a need but some light gaming at low rez would be nice.

I haven't seen anything that fits the bill. It would need discrete graphics, weigh under 6 pounds, be less than a 15.4" screen (14" wide or 13.3 wide would be great), and be under $1000.

it's difficult finding small notebooks with decent graphics, you may find some barebones like the MSI-1013 (turion w/Xpress 200 chipset) or the MSI-1012 (intel/gma)

I'm selling a 600m in the FST forum. (see sig)

but try looking for some ASUS laptops.. you can probably find some used ones for sub $1000 that would have discrete graphics.

It certainly is difficult. The Asus W3V has more than what I want (with an x600, dvd burner, etc.) and is about twice as much as I want to spend. The big problem is that it has to satisfy my wife's need for a small laptop but be able to play the occassional game for friends (specifially COD2). The nVidia 6100 (integrated) will play COD2 which is really all I want. I'll probably upgrade in a year anyway.

Thinkpad T42 (but only if you have access to EPP): there's one with a Radeon 9600 for $975.
If you're ok with used laptops, then there are a good number of T40 or T41's on eBay for under $1k, and those come with Radeon 7500's and 9000s.

Unfortunately the Toshiba M50 can't be configured with discrete graphics without going up to the Pentium M (which adds $150) and you have to also choose the HK speakers which adds another $30. Otherwise, it is a great option. I saw that Techbargains had a pretty good sale last week so maybe that will come around again. The 610 is also over $1000 when you add the video. Dell often has coupons to offset that but nothing currently that will get it below the $1000 mark.

wait a while, it's gonna be 25% or even 30% off soon. Shipping is pretty cheap too. Over night was $29 for me (although, you will not get it over night bc of customs).

If I can find it for 25 or 30% off, it would be just pretty close to perfect. Do you know what the battery life is like with the larger battery?

I have the smaller battery.....i never fully drained it, but I have managed to use it for 2 hours without it being plugged in....By that time, the battry was at about 25% full. I would call battery life atleast decent.

it's 25% off now....for two days only. Be aware of tax also.

Do they have a lenient return policy? My wife might still hate it and make me keep the 700M I currently have. I like the laptop but the keyboard is a bit cramped for my tastes.

15 days.....15% restocking fee....

Ouch. Better check it out at BB beforehand to make sure she likes it. It is her laptop that may be replaced after all.
