$600ish for 1070 in Canada

I was so excited for the 1070 but the 1070 is about $600 plus 13% tax in Canada. So much for the more affordable version. Nvidia and partners are dumb they are losing out soo much by pricing these cards so ridiculously high. $650 for a 1070.... no thanks. Polaris better be good.
 
If its anything like the UK the early 1070 pricing has got bumped up by the retailers, who consider - probably correctly - that they'll still sell everything being produced at the price being charged.

That effect should hopefully go away over time.
 
It looks like the GTX 980 is selling for over $600 in Canada and the R9 390X are in the $550 zone. The 980 Ti are over $700 CAD and the R9 Fury X are over $800 CAD.

In the US, the GTX 980 can be had for under $450, the R9 390X can be had for around $350 the GTX 980 Ti can be had for under $530 and the R9 Fury X are around $630

Sounds like a problem with the Canadian dollar more than Nvidia's pricing.

Considering the GTX 1070 is faster than the R9 Fury X and GTX 980 Ti which sell for $200 and $100 more respectively, I'd say they are more affordable.

Sounds like you can expect to pay $350-$400 CAD for the RX480

Also I'd have to say, I doubt the retailers are losing money. If they are selling all of their stock at what you consider inflated prices, they are actually making more money. If they are not selling their stock, then the will reduce the price.

Newegg Canada and NCIX both seem to be sold out at the moment.

Hopefully this effect goes away. Since every year the flagship cards gets more and more expensive. the x70's in Canada have always been around $400 now its $600. That is my point. Sucks.
 
nvidia certainly won't lower prices because the Canadian dollar is currently almost 30% lower versus the USD.

I guess the old saying of "you got to pay to play" is appropriate here.
 
The strength of the USD is a huge problem for us Europeans as well.. That being said, AIB cards are often priced above the Founders Edition, which should not be the case. I hope prices will settle on their respective MSRPs before too long.

How exactly are they losing out if they're sold out everywhere? Supply & demand dude. Just because it's expensive for u doesn't mean it's expensive for others. For some ppl 600 is pocket change & for others it's reasonable...I imagine those are the ppl they're targeting & they're buying them like hotcakes.

At any rate, $389USD is $480 CDN, I imagine after a few months that's where prices will settle.

IMO if you can wait
save your money for a cut down big die.
I have no problem with $1200 cnd for a top end gpu but $500+ for a mid range gpu that will be in the charts where the gtx 970 is today , big chips are coming sometime in 6-8 months I'll pass on a cut down mid range.
 
That's kind of the problem with you live in an export economy and your government/central bank is obsessed with trashing your currency with negative interest rates to get Americans to buy your goods cheaper. It hurts your own consumers.
 
People don't get it. Nvidia is raising prices. The 1080 is more expensive than the when the 980 was released and the 780 and the 680 and the 580 etc etc and some of you are jsut saying oh its ok. Don't blame them. I bet the 1080 doesnt sell as well as the previous gens simply becuase of the higher price.

But that's the thing, they are selling well & ppl are buying them. If not then they'll lower their prices. The reality is this isn't a necessary product, it's purely a luxury item for entertainment purposes. I'm actually quite happy with my GTX 970 for this year, there's certainly no game coming out this year that can use 5-8GB of VRAM anyways, so maybe next year when demand & prices drop it'll be more affordable.

PS the gtx 670 sold for $399 along with other x70 series cards, so 379 for a gtx 1070 is a price drop. The gtx 970 @ 329 was an exception, it was not the average x70 price.

GTX 780 launched at $649, and it wasn't even the fastest single GPU when it launched. It was only about 16% faster than the GTX 680, and it was 8% slower than the Titan which was already out.

There are already GTX 1080 third party cards listed for $620 US. The GTX 1080 is the fastest single GPU available right now. It is over 35% faster than the GTX 980. It is over 20% faster than Titan X and 980 Ti.

If they don't sell as well, nvidia will drop the prices.

I agree that the entire concept of charging more for a reference card is ludicrous, but as already pointed out in this thread, this is about supply and demand.

Show me where the 1080 partnered cards are listed for $620. pc part picker shows the reference at 700 and the partnered cards will be more expensive

I am seeing the identical EVGA ACX 3.0 card on US sites for $620 and on Canadian sites for $830...an extra $30 Canadian maybe...not $130

Nvidia sets the prices. Not the Canadian dollar. Are you saying Nvidia made these card affordable?
 
The 1070s out there are the 'Founder Edition' ones. Wait a month or two and the normal cards will be like $100 cheaper I bet.

I'm sorry but I gotta ask, how old are u? U don't seem to understand basic economics. We are not getting shafted in Canada. It's just the EXCHANGE RATE. Exchange rates fluctuate in cycles depending on the economy of the 2 countries. Since Canada is a commodity/resource based economy, and the commodities sector is a $hits how right now, our dollar is doing terrible with it. 3 years ago the Canadian $ was at parity with the US $ when oil was at an all time high & countries couldn't get enough oil, so that $620 would've been ~$620 CDN. But now it's 1 USD= 0.77 CDN because, mostly, oil is $47 a barrel. The Canadian $ moves in lockstep with oil prices.

What does our tax rate have to do with shafting? It's 13% yes, but we get full health care coverage for everyone & numerous social services not available in the US. If you want a lower tax rate just move to the USA & deal with all the problems they have to save on your product purchases.

Anyways, this has nothing to do with Nvidia shafting anyone. It's an exhange rate issue and basic supply & demand economics. Wait until u've lived a few decades & u'll see the cycles

If you are talking about the non-reference versions it's the reverse here in the states and they run faster and cooler then the FE version so I guess it's another thing canada gets weird. 😉

But seriously it's not nvidia's fault your canada dollar is so weak atm plus the extra taxes you have to pay much like a lot of europe does.
 
pffftt you Canadians have the exchange rate still pretty good vs USD.

We British are on course for our currency to be worth nothing by the end of the year. Almost 20% drop in 2 weeks.
 
I finally gave up on waiting for sub $500CDN prices since the exchange rate isn't great, and the demand for the cards is so high.

I got the base Gigabyte one for $530 after pricematch from NCIX.
Now if only Purolator would actually deliver it instead of just leaving it on the truck and never attempting delivery 🙁
