600ish dollar general gaming and computer rig

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Web surfing, light gaming Team Fortress 2 until Battlefield 3 comes out.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

Around 600 dollars, don't need monitor or case.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

Open to anything.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

Micro Atx case, cd rom drive, monitor.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Not much.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Likely default.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

Unsure, its a 24 inch monitor so pretty sure its 1920x1080? Its up there.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Soon.

I'm leaning towards an I5 sandy bridge setup with 8 gigs of ram to future proof it for games. The only gaming I do right now is Team Fortress 2 so I can use the onboard video on the Sandy bridge for that.

That way I can wait til later this year to purchase a video card for a bit better price.

Thoughts?

Here's a build:

i5 2500K $220
ASRock Z68 Pro3-M $115
G.Skill DDR3 1333 8GB $50
Samsung F3 1TB $50
XFX Core 550W $50 AR
Total: $485

That leaves you with $115, so you can either factor Windows 7 into your $600 budget (which you weren't planning to do) or with a little stretch get a reasonable GPU like the 6850.

One thing to check is whether or not your existing optical drive (I hope it isn't literally a CD-ROM) is SATA or IDE. Many newer boards (including the Pro3-M) do not include IDE drives. A new SATA DVD-RW is only $20 though.

I do realize that power supply is way overkill but at the same time it is a combo deal which I like, it is modular which I like, and I do intend to add a video card later.

That build has a few problems:
- HDD : 500GB for $60? No, just no. The Samsung F3 1TB has more capacity, is cheaper, and is the same speed.
- PSU: By my math, you are effectively paying $60 for the PSU, which isn't terrible, but I see no way that it is worth it over the XFX
- Mobo: You said you had a MicroATX case, and that mobo is ATX. Won't fit.
- RAM: Outside the combo, the RAM is too expensive.

Thank ya much for the heads up.

Switched out 2 things tell me what you think:

ADATA XPG Gaming Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model AX3U1600GC4G9-2G
Item #: N82E16820211457

Changed ram, this ram is 5 dollars more but has heat spreaders and is on the memory supported list.

Also switched to:

Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

It is modular and 50 bucks after the mail in rebate.

Do you not think it is worth it to get a 6gb per hard drive?

The ADATA is 1.55V-1.75, which is a little high for Sandy Bridge. You want to stick with 1.5V RAM like this Patriot.

The BP550 is fine as a PSU, not as good as the XFX, but it is modular. 6Gb/s does not matter in the slightest for hard drives because their mechanical limits are far below what even SATA 3Gb/s can deliver.
