hi there,

I m gonna upgrade my pc soon. I'm a newbie in overclocking. I'll be buying a duron and wanted to find out which one has a high possiblity of hitting 1ghz. I know 800 should definetly hit 1ghz but wat bout 600? is it worth buyin 800 when u can get a 600 and make it go to 1ghz?

also wat mobo should I be gettin. Keep in mind I'm new to ocing. I find abitKT7 is good as it has everythin in the bios. but wat worries me is the capacitors problem, i.e. very close to the socket makin it difficult for the orb's to fit. please suggest some opinions on the above question(s).

thax.

Well, I finally got my 600 to 1Ghz. Had a few problems, you can check them out here.
I think my problem was probably a fluke, but haven't gotten back around to figuring out exactly what happened. It also ran fine in w2k at 1060Mhz, but tried to install winME and it crashed, so I backed off a bit. Right now mine is running at 45C under 100% utilization.

2 days ago I helped a friend build a system. Here are his specs

KT7-nonraid
duron 800@1000MHZ@37Degrees C
recommended AMD HSF from mwave.com
This one wouldn't do 1100, though I've heard of people getting them up that high.

Also make sure you have a 300W powersupply.

I picked the KT7 over the A7v because it had the Soft CPU. Otherwise I think they are both good motherboards, though I haven't used the A7V.

Do -not- get the 800MHz if you're planning to overclock to 1GHz. I'm sure that some of them will hit it, but I've had three of them that only go to 950MHz with 1.85v, and it's still unstable. Get a 600MHz or 650MHz if you're planning to hit 1GHz. Also have some pretty good cooling.

Lordsandman: "Well, I finally got my 600 to 1Ghz. Had a few problems, you can check them out here."

U call that few problems huh?? maan.....u were in big time prob's...I can imagine that..nehow

I have a 250Watt power supply. So wat are my chances of hitting a gig? Plus as said above get good cooling. Well I have a midtower case with basically no additional fans. but when I'll get the processor I'll be gettin either a golden orb or a chrome orb. So is that enuf?

so under those criteria's should I get a 600 or just stick with 800?

also I heard that its better to get a blue core than green. how far is that statement true. If it is true then wat are my chances to get a blue on. I live in toronto canada. and I plan to buy from Pccanada. their site : www.pccanada.com

btw. What hsf are u using lordsandman? and didn't u have problem when putting the chip on the socket. cuz they say abit kt7 has capacitors close to the socket. so how did u get over with that?

Here's my personal experience:

D600 --> 900MHz, stable
D700 --> 1083MHz, stable

Both CPU's were/are on a KT7 (nonRAID) with a Cooler Master DP5-6H11 Heatsink/Fan. Like PlunX said, good cooling is a must.

I had several duron 600s that wont run at 1000. A few did.

I have some 800's doing just fine at 1050. The cores on these are blue, not green.

600 you can o/c more to get a higher percentage of increase i.e 400 mhz to get to 1 gig
where as w/ and 800 it would only be 200 mhz

As for the motherboard, I would go with the MSI K7T Pro2, especially since you say that you don't have too much experience building an OCed system. Everything in in the BIOS in this board too, and as I understand it, its an easier build than the ABit board.

Also, regarding cooling, the orb is not a good idea. In fact, the chrome orb is a pretty poor performer and the golden orb has a tendency to destroy socket A chips. I'd go with either a Taisol, FOP32/38, or Alpha PAL6035.
