I'm thinking about purchasing a new Dell laptop. In an exact same system, how much real difference is there between a celeron 600 (100mhz bus on the mobile chips) vs. a 600 P3? Is it work an extra $200 just for 128k more of cache and SSE?

There is a quite a large difference, I remember that a 850 Celeron, is slower than a 600 PIII

I just want to clarify something. The 600 mobile celeron has a 100mhz system bus, just like the 600mhz p3 mobile. So the only difference is the extra 128k of cache and SEE? Right?

What type of software will you be using? Will you be playing lots of graphics intensive games on it?

Save your money and get the Celeron. It may not have the best performance but it is a much better buy for the price. As it is I doubt you'll be using a laptop for gaming, to the SSE won't be that useful. The FSB is the same, the core is the same. The only difference is the L2 cache. I would guess that you won't even notice the difference, except in your pocket.

i'm debating the same thing. the p3 has speedstep, but since the celeron has less cache it should use less power. i'm wondering if the cache is as slow (latency) as it is on the desktop celeron? and i'll bet the new mobile celerons have sse. maybe we should get anand to do an article about mobile celerons v p3s.
