Basically im putting a system together for my brother for $600-700 and think he needs a monitor. What would you guys choose for parts. He wants an AMD based system and i might oc for him to make his investment more worthwhile.

I went with this...

You've got everything you need in the 2400+ even if your not overclocking... However, that Hyper X will push 175-180 FSB which will still give you a decent overclock...

The Ti4200 should suit him nicely also for a decently priced system...

600-700 with a moniter?

Well a monitre is ~150 so that leaves you with 450-550

And somewhat overclocking?

Okay...

1700+ ~40 Dollars
8rda+ ~85 Dollars
512megs pc3200 hyperX ~112
Geforce4 from Newegg ~120
++++++++++++++++++++
That puts you at 357$

or I just remembered that Frys has a 2400+/K7s5apro combo for 99$ which is really good so if there is a fry's where you live I would seriously consider that and it would put you at 331 which gives you more breathing room

For the Harddrives I reccomend that you check out the Hot Deals and pick up a drive from there...that is really your BEST option because you can snag a 80 giger for usually less than 80 dollars....that and most people (if they aren't d/ling crap like crazy) really don't use all that space so even a 40giger would do well for him. Let us assume it does cost about 80 bucks though with the newegg path

437....hrm...meaning you have ~100 to spend on heatsink/case/fan/psu which isn't too bad...and for those its really a matter of choice (Newegg has that 350watt enermax for ~45)

Get an entire setup done so we can critique it and change specifics rather than make generalizations

Epox 8RDA+ $85
XP1700- $42
SK7-$20
80MM fan to go with SK7-$10
Crucial PC3200 256 x 2 ($94, this stuff overclocks good)
Abit Geforce 4 TI4200 64MB 8xAGP, $83 (from excaliberpc.com)
WD 40GB w/8MB cache- $66
Lite-On 52x24x52 CD-RW - $43
Antec SLK1600 Case w/300W smartpower-$53
KDS 17inch Xflat ($120 from walmart or office depot/office max)

total w/o tax = $616

Everything is from newegg unless specified. The 256MB crucial with Micron chips is known to go past 230MHZ FSB easily.

I second Lyfers setup. You may go a tad over 700 after shipping etc but it would be worth it. I own 2 KDS X flats. They may not be the best but fo the price its hard to beat. I own the 19" model however which is $180 at wally world, but that would bring you out of your budget by a bit.

Lyfer's setup is good, but I'd hunt around for a rebate deal on the hard drive. For $66, you should get at least 80mb.
