60 Minutes = Blindsided: The exoneration of Brian Banks...Updates in OP

CBS News shown this story early tonight.

Unbelievable. I can not believe this guy is still smiling after losing several years (in his prime) of his life for something he did not do. And the lying accuser is still free and still able to keep all the money, in the million. (from the civil suit of the school district).

Update (4/3/13): http://sports.yahoo.com/news/exonerated-lb-banks-signs-atlanta-144039169--nfl.html

The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Banks will be given an opportunity to win a spot on the team at inside linebacker. He met with Falcons coach Mike Smith at the team's facility Wednesday.
''I had a really amazing one-on-one conversation with him,'' Banks said. ''He congratulated me and said he was happy for me to be here but this was just the beginning of a long road to making that next step and making that 53-man roster. We both agreed that I don't expect any handouts or any favoritism. I'm here to work like everybody else and the result of my hard work will be whatever they deem necessary.
''All I can do is my best and however the turnout will be, I thank God for the opportunity.''

Best wishes, Mr. Banks, and keep up with that positive attitude.

I can't view the video right now, is this the story of the football player who got accused of rape while in HS or early college and he had a very bright future ahead of him. He's out now and is pursuing tryouts with NFL teams?

They should go after the accuser who gave false statement to the authorities. Let her pay back the $1miilion+interest, sue her, put her behind bars for the same period of time he spent. 😵

It's a bit of a catch-22. If they go after her, then what motivation would somebody have in the future to come forward and admit that their accusations were false?

I'm sure if all the ATOT atheists pray extra hard for her to be hit by a truck going 80, the big man may come through in the the hopes of adding a few more to his ranks. 😀

IIRC, it's rare for a rape accuser to ever admit being wrong. So I don't think that is a factor, though it is often brought up.

The absence of malice, ill will, and the desire for revenge, speak volumes to this young mans character and his mothers. If it were up to me, I would freeze, and seize all the accusers assets. If she did not have a job,(rhetorical?), I would give her one, and with the threat of REAL jail time, take most of her paychecks till the school district, and Brian's mom, who sold nearly everything she had to defend her son, were payed back.

What I do not understand is not like this woman was mistaken ID Mr. Banks out of a line up. She was out right lied to the court AND then sued the school district for million of dollars AND is still able to keep all of that ill gotten money.

I would sue her lying ass if I was Mr. Banks.

<shaking head in disbelieve>

I disagree, and think they should throw the book at the bitch to send the signal that making false accusations WILL get your found out and WILL send you away for a very, very long time. A non-insignificant amount of woman use it as a tool or a coverup for their own terrible decisions and ruin innocent lives in the process. This needs to stop.

Awful

This guy seems like he could have been one of the few in the NFL to have a decent character, and that's AFTER jail time. What a shame. I guess he might still have a shot but still... The system is so screwed up and lord only knows how many people are locked up for similar situations. When somebody is forced to plea "no contest" to a crime they didn't commit because of the bias in the courts then something is horribly wrong.

So very true.

It's good to see him focusing on living his life, trying to make the most of every day, instead of looking backwards with hate and anger.

He's one of the best role models we'll ever see.

And to add insult to injury, the defense attorney probably made a cool $50,000+ just to enter that plea.

A few new things I learned during this story:
1) He was "only" a two-star recruit out of high school. But he was recruited by Carroll at USC so that says something
2) He seems to have done worse at his NFL tryout than I had previously heard. Understandable, but he didn't seem to make it far.
3) His chances of making the NFL seem significantly low

Is there is a system in place to help people like him get jobs? I'm sure being in prison for 5 years will hurt your ability to adjust.

Before i saw the video I was thinking about posting a statement on "keeping it in your pants" until your partner is sober, but they didn't even have sex. This wasn't some drunken sex event, they just made out according to him. This woman is nuts, and the system just enables her behavior. It will be difficult to convict real rapists when you have liars who cast doubt on all accusations.

You look around for where the problem is, and it seems likely it's with the prosecutor's office, that they were determined to proceed despite his innocence.

Obviously other problems are the girl lying - some people are massively irresponsible and unethical - and that our legal system doesn't hold up to finding the right result here.

That's a problem with a crime like rape - it's horrible, but very hard not to either let a lot of guilty go free or convict innocents, because the evidence is difficult usually.
