I was just watching 60 minutes and they said that a National Guard reserves sgt first class only makes 2700 a month. He has a wife and 3 kids and his wife barely able to pay bills and only being able to pay because of outside family support. How in the world is the army think that people will continue signing up for reserves if they can only make 2700 a month and that is sgt not pvt. Btw this guy was making 100,000 in private industry

Some people in the military have to go on food stamps to get by. My friend's family did. They had 4 kids and he was an E-3.

You don't join the military for the money.

Being a reserve, it's not supposed to be a full time job. The pay is also part of the sacrifice. You're not supposed to go into the military for the money...

If he was making that much then he should have not signed up for the reserves.

He knew that there is always a chance he might get called up. AND even if he does, when he is done he will have his job(or at least pay) waiting for him(talked about in another thread)

He took the chance he go in a couple days everu month and make some extra cash, well he got called up, that is part of the job, he knew it.

but they get so much benefits tho

they get aid in getting a home loan, discounted auto insurance, um.. i guess there are more.

That seems a little bit backwards 😕

Well, you don't pursue anything you love for the money, but ou ought to be doing better than food stamps, it seems.

Umm 2700 a month is 32,400 a year. Jobs that pay that well aren't very easy to get even with a college degree. Wish I could get a job that pays that much.

they aren't? That's weird, if I worked my high school job full time(which I could have if I didn't go to college), I would have made $30,000/year.

With a wife and 3 kids that's not very much dough, though.

Wait, leme get this straight: He was a reserve making 2700 per month, was he a reserve making less than that and got upped for being called, or was he regular nat'l guard?

Then again, you really shouldn't have 4 kids if you make such a small amount of money. I guess that you could argue it either way though.

What I don't understand is why people in the military should have to pay income tax. That seems messed up to me.

Sorry will have to disagree I know it?s not typical but my parents self employed are making around $200,000 a year so it?s possible. But I also agree that they should at least be paid enough to stay off food stamps btw he gets paid only 15.34 a day. Sorry but that is not allot of money. U can't even buy a house on that kind of money.

i don't think he got aloit of any money whille being reserved, he was not active reserve till he just got called up . Till that time he was working in private sector making 100,000 a year.

I see.
Still, that's only about $6,000 per person per year on that salary. I'm sure he's got a lot saved making that kind of money, though.
A situation like that, a five member family, for instance, would be harder for the tamer income, surely.

From watching 60 min seams they didn't safe allot of any at all. Plus his wife is pregnant. They bought a house etc as most family do when they are building a family. Also it seems that he was working for a good company that is also helping her out while he is on active duty.

Have you seen the economy lately Deeko, I know plenty of people that have college degrees that are getting pink slips from their job. 🙁 I suppose the PA job market is in full swing by your post 😕

Lol personally agree with u on that one. Have a family member near New York stayed with same company for 12 years and just got a pink slip.

I know the economy isn't good right now, and I know the job market isn't great either. But Anandtechians have a habit of making it seem like nobody has jobs....94% of the country does. My school is also instrumental in my getting a job after graduation, as I will have a good deal of co-ops done, and experience matters.

My dad is getting laid off at the end of the month. He works for agere. He was been with the company since it was Lucent, AT&T, and whatever it was before that. 20some years. He got a years' severance, and he's already got a job interview. It doesn't pay as well as his old job, but its a paycheck, and it will do until he finds something better.
