Its a stock coolermaster heat sink and fan off a 1600+ but it has a fin missing (Only fan i could get hold of, should be getting a new one within the next few days), the case is closed no exhaust or anythoing, hell my palamino 1600+ is running at 48 after running seti 24/7 for the past week ;)

for temporary relief, pop open the side panel for better circulation. for long term cooling, maybe uprgrade to a SK7 and add an exhaust fan

a fan duct would also help

I agree with mr.overkiller.... Tbirds (especially 1.3 - 1.4 GHz) are very hot, my brother's system (K7S5A + tbird 1.33) runs around 55-65

I too agree, as long as he meant T-Birds and not Tbreds. My 1.33 ghz TBird runs at, max, 57C, and that's with a nice copper HS with 5000 RPM fan.

I went through quite the ordeal a year or two ago with my 1.33 Tbird in getting it to cool down a bit. In theory, they're rated to a max of 95ºC I believe, but you definitely don't want it running near that. Many people have simply told me "if it hasn't crashed, you're cool." It really does depend on your motherboard and such, as I never had problems around 63C but my friend's same 1.33 Ghz would crash incessantly at 61C (with a much poorer board.) After a couple minutes and an Alpha PAL8045, I cooled that baby down from 63C to 48C, and I'm happy there. :)

Ah, that's why. The Palomino 1600 runs cooler than the Tbird 1.3. If the heatsink had trouble with the Palomino, it'll definitely have trouble with the Tbird 1.3. I had an Alpha 8045 with a 41CFM fan on it, and it kept a Tbird 1GHz@1.4GHz at about 52C. The later Tbirds put out a lot of heat.
60C is just the thermistor reading; the core is actually hotter. I'd bet its within tolerance (90C core temp), but it's still too hot for my tastes.

Can you guys explain or link to what you mean when you say fan duct? Thanks,

Ollie

Basically, you have a duct running from outside the side of the case to the CPU fan, so it is always bringing in cooler air.

I'm setting up an SOB machine right now that is a 1.33 tbird.
I've got it set @1463mhz (11x133) on 1.8v just messing around with an OC.
MBM5 is reading 59ºC on the cpu... the board is on cardboard in a ~78ºF server room.
By the way... whats a safe voltage for this chip? can i go higher?

Yes, these cpus run hot, but 64 sounds a little bit high to me - a little tweaking could probably bring that temp down some. I just upgraded from a T-Bird 1.4 and when I first installed it about a year ago it ran in the mid 50s - that was with a aluminum Taisol HSF and 2 case fans. So to bring the temps down I did 2 things. I added a 92 fan on the bottom of my case (had to mod the case and prop up the front a little) and lowered the vcore 0.10v (~1.80 to ~1.70 with no performance drop). With that the cpu temps dropped from ~55 to ~45.

BTW, my new 2500+ runs just as hot as the 1.4.

helllz no thats not too hot
my 1ghz tbird ran 65C IDLE and 80C+ full load for quite some time. I still have it too. switched itout wiht a tbred b 1700+ now, but it still works nonetheless.

the only reason i cooled it down after almost a year was cuz i wanted to try my luck at ocing it. otherwise i would have left it. my uncles xp1800+ palomino runs at 60-65C under load just fine, and has been for like a year. As long as you dont want to overclock, or if it doesnt crash, its all good. You can also try undervolting it (my tbird1ghz i found after some experimenting ran fine at 1.45v, and my 1700+ tbred b runs fine at 1466mhz at 1.3v lol)

Ouch man, my TBird 1.2GHz only ran that hot when my stock heat sink fan died on it. Then again, that was in January in Ontario, so ambient room temperature was ~10C.

You need monsters to tame tbirds, especially when they're overclocked. I had an original Swifty 462 w/ 68cfm delta which kept my 1.0@1.5 1.85v at 50c load but it was pretty loud. A ocz gladiator w/ 60mm delta screamer did the job also, that too was dam loud. But if you're just running stock speed and your system is stable, 65c should be fine. That's the temp my 1.33 ran at with a sk6 + 25cfm 60mm...
