either way, is this something i can buy at a computer store? id hate to have to wait and have such a small thing shipped to me

If you have a 9800GX2, the single 6-pin to 8-pin kind should suffice. They're hard to come by but a few places do sell them. Try Performance PCs, FrozenCPU or the BFG store.

On the other hand, the dual 6-pin to 8-pin kind that the GTX 280s come with are just about impossible to find anywhere individually. The only realistic way to get that kind seems to be to buy it off someone on a forum who doesn't need it.

Don't buy that. It looks similar but is the wrong adapter for a video card and will probably fry it. You need an 8-pin PCIE connector, not an 8-pin EPS one.

The stores carrying them have ripoff prices, but there doesn't seem to be any alternative except to buy it from someone like I said.

Yes, that looks correct. Still a little expensive, but the shipping is reasonable unlike Performance PCs.
