6 people at work got fired yesterday

So 6 people at my work got fired yesterday. Within a couple weeks of getting year-end bonus, which is 1/3 of their year's pay!

I understand that the market is down, but we set a record 1st and 2nd quarter. To basically keep them around to make lots of money for the bosses right until just before they would get their share of that hard work is really really pissing me off and is very worrying.

This job is very dangerous and we literally risk our lives. We are only like ~180 employees. Really worried here. :\

fired is prob the wrong term
"let go" because the company isnt making as much money is prob more like it

Probably a cost cutting measure and reduce their year-end bonus. :\

Chances are they will be replaced with lower paid/part-time personnel doing a similar job and no chances of getting a bonus until they work for that company for a couple of years.

Something along the lines of "Not having fully integrated into our client based business structure" or something like that. Pretty much a bullshit reason I think.

I've worked with only 1 of those 6 before, and yeah they were not the star employee I suppose, but they still put up with hell working conditions and still got the job done where the vast majority of people would have just quit. The should at least have been given their bonus that they earned throughout the year.

They aren't leveraging their win-win relationship with the employers while not synergizing their skillset with the company's mission in this highly competitive landscape.

Sucks for anyone to loose their job at anytime. Especially over the past 10 years I have seen so many people come & go (often involuntarily) that I am pretty numb to it now.

people got let go where i work last month and more will prob be let go as well. way more than 6.

its annoying, we as a company are gonna clear 9 billion in profits this year which is up from last year by a lot but not as much as forecasts so people get cut

I bet your company are the same of those that whine about the "skills gap" and the costs of rehiring when underlying cracks show up.

I'm sure they could file a lawsuit or maybe there is a gov entity you could report this too? Maybe embarass them by letting a news org know?

This is why you go in every day and do the job to the best of your ability, but you have to hold no loyalty to your employer. Lord knows they have no loyalty to you.

It's a bit of a dick move to lay people off right before the holidays. I'm not sure why so many companies do this. December 31st is not end of fiscal year for most businesses. It's really bad PR.

I'm sure someone higher up will get a nice Christmas bonus now. "Look at how much money I saved the company!"

At most places, an employee is a number on a ledger. If that number represents <short term> profit, the number stays on the list. If not, it is removed.

Your company has done you a favor. In no uncertain terms they have let you know what kind of employer they are.

Now you have a choice. You can continue to work for them and wait to see if the ax ever swings your way or you can start working on finding a new job.

Yea I feel bad for those people. My company used to give bonuses every summer that was 1/3 of the salary. Now our year end bonus consists of 3-4 % or so and then some cash performance bonus.

I asked for a promotion and my manager made me give presentations to the higher up mangers and said this would give her an opportunity to show them visibility that I should be promoted from an entry level position. I've been there 2.5 years now doing non entry level work at all. People stay for the summer and year end bonuses though. They only let go of contractors.

Peter Gibbons: You see, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
Bob Porter
: Don't- don't care?
Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime, so where's the motivation? And here's another thing, I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Porter
: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

Crap like that is why I left the corporate world. I took a roughly 50% cut in pay. Most days it's worth it. There's also the added benefit of reducing my chances of going to prison for manslaughter. Although, I miss the looks on management's faces when they realized I held them personally responsible and not the company. 😀

it's happening all over. Full time jobs go away and part time jobs take their place. The smoke and mirrors and lies of the obama economy.
