Plus the fact that people block their first PCI slot with monster GPU fans.

My 4 slots are used up, because of this. :(

EDIT: freebee beat me to it.

I could use more pci slots,

ATA100 controller
ATA100 controller
UW SCSI
PCI controller(parallel port, serial)
SB live Platinum
NIC

No more room for any Firewire or USB 2.0 card.

<< Instead of more PCI slots, how about a little more space between them so large heat sinks/fans have some room to operate. All too often the slot next to the agp card can't be used if you put a large heatsink on the vid card. Also with some devices, they are just about touching each other, which is probably not good from a heat perspective and air flow. >>

The problem with that is it wouldn't fit any cases out there. They have standard spacing for PCI slots. :( Though I agree with the idea.

Back when I had my PII, I had these PCI slots filled (in no particular order):

1) Voodoo2 (SLI)
2) Voodoo2 (SLI)
3) NIC
4) Soundblaster Live Value
5) ISA modem (shared a PCI slot..so it took one)

With my current system, all I'm using is two...NIC and sound card. (3 if you count the extra USB ports).

Too much is never enough!;) Besides it's not like the latency is that much. If they give you 6, take it, don't complain and just get 4.

<< splice - read this.

<< It supports up to two Intel® Pentium® III Xeon ? processors with a 133 MHz system bus for higher performance and reliability. For increased I/O performance, the SBT2 has seven PCI slots. >>

No, you missed part of the spec there... there are two independed I/O buses... I know for a fact that PCI2.2 specs upto 6 DMA devices.

Directly from the spec page: "Two Independent PCI buses"

This is something I want to get things changed. The amount of slots we have now is just way too much. Realisticly a new board should come with onboard NIC, USB, etc. The only thing you really should need is 1 AGP, 1 for sound, 1 for another NIC, and maybe one more for another card. ATX is way too big, imo.
