Edit: Today (Thursday, 1/6/05), it's showing as $15.99, but was $39.99 a day or two ago.

Old info:

Unfortunately, Harbor Freight increased the price of the digital calipers overnight (sometime between when I ordered yesterday and now, anyway) from $15.99 to $39.99. I didn't get wind of this from FW, here or any other board but by looking through the table of "more CEN-TECH items" link at Harbor Freight. Hopefully, they'll drop the price again. I mistakenly linked when I posted this morning to the dial calipers, my bad. :(

Harbor Freight has a large catalogue and has B&M stores, but I don't live near one so I ordered online.

Link to DIGITAL calipers item, which WAS $15.99 yesterday but is $39.99 today!

They do currently (01/02/2005, 12:42 PM PST) have a 6'' CALIPER WITH EXTRA LARGE LCD READOUT for $29.99

Here's a very good review (along with tips, etc.) of the digital calipers from a couple of years ago, although the review has been updated and so has the product.

Harbor Freight can have handling charges as well as shipping charges, however I got this along with several other items that brought my total to around $100 and my handling charge was zero with shipping charges of $8.99. If I were just to order this item and nothing else right now, their calculator shows no handling charge but a shipping charge of $5.95 and CA tax of $0.87. They have a shipping calculator and it appears to be based of the total $ for the order.

I also ordered 2 digital multimeters in my order at $2.99 each. There's a thread in this forum on this multimeter item: Thread

The title is incorrect or the link and title are incorrect. The link you gave was for a dial caliper, not a digital one for 9.99. The link you gave for a review is for the 6" digital caliper which is 39.99 here

Correct. I linked to the wrong item in the OP. Yesterday, when I placed my order it was $15.99. Today, I mistakenly linked to the $9.99 dial caliper, my mistake! And as Webley observed, the price has shot up to $39.99, ugh! Sorry, folks! :(

As of today (Thursday, 1/6/05) it's back at $15.99 at the website

Digital Calipers.

If they boost it back up to $39.99 (or any price over $15.99) I'm pretty darn sure you can get them to sell it to you for $15.99 by calling them at 800-423-2567 (24 hour number) and telling them that this item (47257-5CZA) is listed as $15.99 in their catalog (on page 3). It says on the same page that you can order online, by phone or by fax. The price in the catalogue they have to honor.

I got my shipment today. The digital calipers looks quite good.

It pays to watch the prices in the flyers. They normally vary considerably for any particular tool. I picked up one of the 12" calipers for $20 last year. I think they screwed up, the CSR was flustered, but they honored it. I was tempted to push my luck and order 6!

I think HF uses some algorithm to float their prices up and down and then using the sales volume compute the optimum price for the most profitable sales.

Or they're just idiots.
