Sometimes they have the 6" digital metal one in a plastic hardcase for $9.99. Even got a serial digital output.

My dad bought a SPI brand digital caliper for work, and I bought the cheapo Harbor Freight one. The build quality and look were identical except for the SPI/'Electronic Digital Caliper' labels.

Harbor Freight sells a couple grades of calipers: cheap and dirt cheap. These are the dirt cheap ones. I have some of the more expensive ones, paid about $16 for them but they are often on sale for $12, and while they work fine the battery goes dead quickly which is kind of a pain. The early digital calipers from the instrument companies had the same issue but the current ones last for several years and even turn off by themselves if you leave them on. I picked up a couple of different Mitutoya calipers off ebay that were like new for less than $50 shipped. I suggest going this way if you want quality and longevity, but these HF calipers are great if you know they will get trashed.
